Going into this fight I was surprised so many still favored Martinez. We all knew his knees were bad, but there was more than just that. Simply put, he has been getting hit and hurt his last few fights. His reflexes and smoothness left him since the Chavez fight. The writing was on the wall.

I sort of expected Cotto to win, but still had questions about him also. Roach seems to have lit some renewed confidence in Miguel. He fights more confident and went in there and took command. Two fights in a row where he seems to have found what he lost years ago. You could see it before he even threw a punch in the first round. He seemed focused, sharp and determined.

Oh, I was crazy. Definitely crazy. I thought Martinez could actually withstand more than a glancing blow to the side of his head from Cotto without turning into somebody on a heroin overdose.. Silly me. I thought Cotto's punches would be slow enough so I could actually see them. I thought Martinez, the naturally larger, "stronger" guy would actually be able to handle himself in clinches and not get ragdolled by Cotto with outrageous ease. If it was legal I'm pretty sure Cotto could have literally ripped Sergio's head off and kicked it into orbit.

I guess the unknown was the knee and the inactivity. I was naive to think just because Martinez was bigger and has good one punch KO power when he lands, that he would beat a tuned up, motivated Cotto. Oh well. Sergio has had a good run but at 39, it's time to hang them up.

On a side note, it's never good to call a ko round and go out like that.

I knew there was a chance Sergio would look that bad, but I really, really hoped he wouldn't. The worst thing that could have happened last night did.
