Comments Thread For: Roach Has No Doubt Cotto Can Push Martinez Around

Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31KOs) started his professional career at 140 pounds, but will be gunning for a world title 20 pounds north when he faces Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28KOs) on June 7 at MSG.

Cotto fought just three fights at 154, going 1-2, with a win over the pedestrian Delvin Rodriguez, and losses to Floyd Mayweather and Austin Trout. The fight with Martinez is for the lineal middleweight title, but will be contested at a catchweight of 159.

Roach is overrated and delusional if he thinks Cotto will push Martinez around.

Cotto wasn't 1-2 at 154.... He's 4-2 with 4 KOs... sucks when the "news" gets it wrong.

Uhm, Roach is off the mark on this one. Cotto is way smaller and if Kelly Pavlik barely was able to out muscle Martinez and he was huge at MW.

If Cotto wins, it's not going to be by being physical like that.

I second this. I'm a Cotto fan and followed him over his career but I truly believe he's in way over his head with this fight.

Cotto is just great for boxing...He takes on all challengers and is willing to move up to take on challenges...although the 159 catch weight was kind of weird...it isn't that bad especially when a guy like Martinez was calling out Pac and Mayweather saying he would go down to 154...so he should stop crying..

Floyd wouldn't even fight Martinez at 154...so you can just see why Floyd is never taken seriously as a top ATG.

You are truly obsessed with FMJ, why? Are you using a double-standard? At the end of your 1st paragraph you stated Martinez called out Pac and FMJ but Mayweather is the not considered an ATG because he didnt accept the challenge. What about PAC? Would PAC take the fight if Martinez said 150?

He's talking about when the fight is on the inside. That's where all of Martinez's advantages become disadvantages. His statement is not as black and white as most idiots on NSB will make it out to be. On The Inside Martinez HAS A Habit Of Leaning Forward Or Bending At The waist making him the shorter fighter. The reach factor would give cotto the strength advantage on the inside as well.

Bottom line is this isn't the same Martinez...he's been dropped and hurt...he doesn't get away from punches as well...and he just looks old now body wise...a prime Martinez would win no doubt in my mind...but this Martinez is very beatable...I think Cotto needs to press the action and go to the body...Cotto should be able to take punches better with the extra weight as well...I think it's a 50/50 because Martinez is bit past his prime at this prime physically...Cotto is still physically fine although he's taken a few beatings himself...
