Comments Thread For: Referee Admits: I Was Very Close To Penalizing Maidana

Hall of Fame referee Tony Weeks has spoken for the first time since his handling of the Floyd Mayweather WBC/ WBA welterweight title unification clash against Argentinian slugger Marcos Maidana at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada last weekend.

The veteran referee took a lot of flak from fans some arguing that he allowed Maidana to get away with too much rough-house tactics in his gusty majority defeat by the pound for pound star.

Oh so yall was just gon let this slip off the front page huh? Nah fucc that.

It was the rough fight and Maidana used a lot of rough tactics and I was very close to taking a point away from him, he said.

Weeks added that both fighters used all they could to win the bout making it a competitive affair Mayweather has been involved in a long time.

There were things happening from both sides but for the most part Mayweather was the cleaner fighter.

Too late Tony you fucced up bad. Rabbit punces, hip punches, wild ass mma head punches and even a knee attempt??

    A FUCCIN KNEE ATTEMPT???

IN a boxing match doe? Do your fuccin job.

I thought Maidana was getting away a little much but Floyd also had some dirty moments in there too. But in the end I honestly dont care cause the dirty tactics is what made this fight fun.

Weeks did let Maidana get away with all of his usual rough house tactics, but he also stayed out of the fight. That's all that counts to us fans.

Weeks did many favours to Chino, i'm surprised no points were taken off

That fight was so damn untidy, it was like watching MMA

Dunno...Weeks gave Russell Mora a run for his money. I think Steve Smoger would've done a bit more. Weeks was like off the clock. Health was definitely at risk with the degree that Maidana took it dirty.

I wonder if Weeks missed the knee or just ignored it. Even the commentators didn't really talk about it like they probably should have.

Weeks was in a rough spot as a referee. You have to maintain order, but you also have to let the guys fight. I'd rather a referee let guys fight and only interject if things get out of hand than constantly insert himself in the action. That was Maidana's best chance to throw Floyd off, and I'm glad he was allowed, though he did go overboard at times. It's not like Floyd hasn't done the same to his opponents sometimes.

too little too late miadana should have been deducted a point. i was waiting for him to hit Floyd with a folding chair before he gets a point taken.

not defending maidana he was the dirtier fighter but let it be known Floyd held for a lot more time than khan and he elbowed and forearmed as well as going low so he was cleaner but not clean at all
