Comments Thread For: Hunter Admits His Rep Also at Stake in Khan-Collazo

VIRGIL HUNTER has backed Amir Khan to come back better than ever after a year out of the ring.

The 27-year-old has not fought since scraping past veteran Julio Diaz last April as he prepares to take on big-hitting southpaw Luis Collazo on May 3 in Las Vegas.

The Bolton-born fighter gave up a chance to face the then IBF champ Devon Alexander in December as he chased a fight with Floyd Mayweather that eventually fell through.

Well Virgil practically raised Ward in the boxing world, it is unfair to say that, sugars.

With that said I don't think Virgil takes any kind of hit with Khan or Angulo losing, they have styles that are better suited for Robert Garcia or Freddie Roach. Since they first signed his as his trainer, I always expressed how ******ed that was. And I also said a big deal will be made when they lose, Virgil will be blamed, but it's not his fault. That guy Brian Gonzales, the one who fought Oosthuizsen(spelling), is a Virgil trained fighter and I thought he was pretty good and that is the style better suited for Virgil.

Even now fans ignore how certain trainers are jut better than others with certain styles. You can not have a Ricky Hatton with a Floyd Sr. Khan will never be good under Virgil, and it is not even Virgil's fault.

i forgot about how long hunter has been with ward, my mistake. yea ricky hatton pairing with floyd sr is one of the better examples of what you're getting at, lol. im not saying virgil is a bad trainer, but always scratched my head when khan switched to him. i never liked fighters constantly switching out trainers

A good trainer will never be beneficial to a fighter that cannot control their emotions and reactions under duress.

Virgil can give Khan good advice in training and develop good routines for him that worked wonders for other fighters. But the one thing that is a major flaw with Khan is his reactions to certain events during the course of a real fight. Khan seems to lose focus and discipline at the most inopportune times causing a cascading effect which snatches defeat from the jaws of victory. The pattern is that Khan will win the first few rounds and once the tide turns southbound even the slightest, he will start to make one mistake after another leading to his eventual flooring. After that, Khan has never been able to recapture the pace or the edge had in earlier rounds and therefore has to resort to using his legs to save the day. This is not a formula that will ever lead to great success in the elite ranks .......

Another bad habit gained during Khan's time with Roach, is trying to adopt the style of Pacman, while missing the necessary natural tools to pull it off with any consistency. The time spent under Roach taught Khan, at least gave him the impression that his new way of fighting will be more successful because it works for Pacman -- And that is absolutely false. And everytime Khan gets in the ring he's going to get a different wake-up call that he needs to go back to how he was fighting post Olympics and forget trying to emulate someone who has the perfect body-type and attributes to employ that rotating, in & out boxing style. Khan may have good enough speed to pull off certain Pacman style tactics during a match, but he does not have the footwork, the body awareness, nor the punching power to force change in an opponents attack. Khan lingers in a bad position far too long, giving even a slow, wide swinger such as Danny Garcia an easy target. And if you can get caught by looping slow, wide punches, then you're a sucker for straight short shots.

In spite of the long so-called training sessions Khan's been doing with Virgil, I'm willing to bet that he will remain good2go for the first four rounds ONLY, and from there its all downhill again.

Virgil will be wondering aloud post-fight, trying to figure what went wrong again.

Hunter is a good trainer, but he's right about this. His rep is definitely on the line ,especially considering Angulo lost his last two fights, and Khan has looked suspect in his last 2 fights.

This guy is garbage as a trainer. Come to think I was very high on him after seeing Ward all these years. He is one of those trainer who his main fighter makes him look good. It sort of like Roger Mayweather and Floyd. Besides Ward, I haven't seen this guy implement any basics with his fighters, Khan, Berto or Angulo. As a matter of fact, those fighters seem to have regressed further since they got with Hunter. At least we should see them do something differently than before sort of like what Maidana is doing under Garcia. Khan needs to get with Mayweather Sr. asap so he can hone his defense a bit.
