I had forgotten about that crappy scoring from 2 of 3 judges. Friends and I watched it live. They were all pizzed, I was ecstatic. Here's a man who had just lost his Mom, and he was damned sure not gonna lose that night. And he did it, he slayed the dragon. And I had just seen him a few years earlier dominate Greg Page at the Omni in Atlanta, so I was a fan of his whereas none of my friends were. Every time they came over for months I'd play the tape back. They weren't amused. HA!

One of the very few and rare quality articles on boxingscene. A great read, well written, informative.

Douglas didn't have what a lot of Tyson opponents had when facing him, fear.

The worse thing that could happen to him already did a few weeks before and nothing that Tyson could do could remotely come close to replicating that pain.

Tyson style would always have problems with a good jab.

My reaction watching this when it happened and rewatching it now was that Buster Douglas was not all that hurt. He seemed pissed at himself that he got caught and, to show such emotion, indicated he had his wits about him. Tyson on the other hand, was clearly in awful shape and that was a proper stoppage. Bear in mind, I was rooting for Tyson and had no complaints when this fight occurred and have none today.

Boxers and fans complaining about long counts usual miss the point. If properly counted, many boxers could have and would have gotten up in time. You can't hold it against them that the ref gave them a long count. On the other hand, look at Sonny Liston vs. Ali II. He got up before the count of ten and then had the fight waved off because the guy keeping time outside the ring said a ten count had occurred. Now that is bs.

Douglass was aware of the count.

However, the referee did count su****iously slow.

Bull. Any fan of the sport knows that a fighter only has to beat the ref's count and have the ref be satisfied of their condition to continue. Buster could have been on the mat for 20 seconds. It didn't matter if you, Timex or anyone else counted past 10, as long as he beats the ref's count. In fact, a ton of fighters who got knocked down and went on to win fights would have lost by KO IF the stopwatch decided things. This long-count business is old news. I'm surprised people have the nerve to bring it up anymore. Watch the fight (it's great) and tell me who deserved to win it. Even if it was only for one night, Buster fought his ass off.

British ref would've stopped the fight after Douglas was down. See the Malik Scott - Dereck Chisora for a recent example of British reffing.

Just my own opinion, but Tyson's downfall was not the death of Cus. It was Tyson himself. Cus merely held him in check. Once Cus was gone, Mike went back to being Mike.

difference is one was focused on the ref and the other was dazed with his mouthpiece hanging out of his mouth
