Comments Thread For: Sulaiman Vows To Reduce Fatalities After Gonzalez's Death

The only way to reduce fatalities in the ring is strict attention to prevention, said WBC Executive Secretary Mauricio Sulaiman, when asked about the passing of boxer Oscar “Fantasma” Gonzalez.

“I was there at the arena and the truth is that it wasn’t a hard fight. It was a tough accident, which was nobody’s fault. Oscar had passed all the medical tests” Mauricio said.

Nice to see the WBC getting the most important things right at least. As a UK fight fan sometimes you wonder why ref's don't allow struggling fighters to continue as long as they do elsewhere in the world. But all the recent fatalities and serious injuries accross the Atlantic have justified it completley. Competitors well being is hands down the most important thing.

I know people are dying and all but if they keep dumbing boxing down, nobody's gonna wanna watch it.

Personally I think the question needs to be asked why boxing has a poorer safety record than MMA. I've seen people suggest its due to the less sustained beatings people take (due to more padded gloves and long fights) which appear to be more dangerous than 1 punch KO's. I don't think shorter duration fights would be any less exciting either, if you've ever seen K1/Glory kickboxing for example which are contested over 3 rounds, there is still plenty of knockouts in fast paced fights. I'm not suggesting go that few rounds, but I wonder how say 7 or 9 round fights with 4oz gloves would increase the safety of fighters. Or if more medical exams, regulations, weight cutting/dehydrating restrictions would help.

I agree that in boxing you keep getting hit on the head and its the "accumulation" of punishment not one punch that causes damage so better to get KOed quick like k1/glory than receive a pounding for 12 rounds on the head. Also in kickboxing and mma you get hit all over the place so the punishment is distributed all over the body, less damage to the head and less deaths.

So i believe its the nature of the sport not safety regulations.

There is only one solution: All boxers must now box only in the boring "Cuban Style" of boxing.
