Comments Thread For: 'Fighting Words' - Pascal-Bute: Too Late & Not Too Good

by David P. Greisman - The fans still packed the Bell Centre, more than 20,000 of them spending the evening in Montreal watching a card headlined by their province’s two most popular boxers of recent years. Many still cheered for Jean Pascal, and many more still roared for Lucian Bute.

It was a big fight, one that had been spoken of for years. But it was a big fight in name only ?and only because of the names involved.

In truth, it was a fight that came far too late.

And because of that, it was a fight that produced far too little excitement, lacking much in the way of action and drama.

Years ago, this would’ve been a bout between two boxers at or near the top of their respective divisions. Now it was a match between two men who had nearly bottomed out.

Years ago, the pairing hadn’t happened because each felt he had something better on the horizon. Now it was a meeting that might as well happen before the sun set on one (or both) of their careers. [Click Here To Read More]

Bute was never that good so anytime the fight would have happened, Pascal would have won. Its easy to see Bute is still shook over Froch KO, but he was just overrated. His biggest fight before the Froch fight was Miranda.... Miranda is a OK boxer but is not elite. Im from Montreal and I was never sold on Bute. I was seeing him fight the ****tiest opposition at 168 while the super 6 was going, and I knew one day his hype would be done. In Montreal he had so many groupies that thought he was the real deal it made me laugh. People were actually belieing he would KO Froch lol. I love it when overrated boxers gets exposed. Pascal is not the best neither but he fought way better opposition at least.

That was a bit of a childish dig at Jim Watt there at the end. Is the writer jealous that Jim Watt is far more successful in the boxing business. Every point he made calling the fight was a valid one and I understand his score card. He even said he would understand any scoring one way or the other because neither fighter was doing much. It was a case of what you like, either the ten second cave man rampage burst that would happen once per round from Pascal or the feather duster jabs and very occasional straight lefts from Bute.

I thought Pascal won but I didn't have it by a wide margin. He landed more eye catching punches but he was taking most of each round off. He was very effective with the counter straight right hand. Bute wouldn't let his hands go and when he did it was never with any conviction until the last two rounds.

both fighters looked terrible in one of the worst title fights I have seen in years.

butes finished and pascal is a poor champion

froch vs pascal ii would be good though
