Comments Thread For: Roy Jones Jr: Adrien Broner Faced Maidana Too Soon

Former four division world champion Roy Jones Jr. believes Adrien Broner (27-1, 22KOs) made a big mistake in rushing to fight such a big puncher like Marcos Maidana (35-3, 31KOs) last December in San Antonio.

Broner, a three division former champion, moved up from 135 to 147-pounds last June against Paulie Malignaggi, who is one of the lighter punchers at the weight. Broner struggled to win a twelve round split decision. Last month, he faced Maidana and saw himself dropped hard in the second and the eight, and stunned several times before losing a twelve round unanimous decision.

Broner faced Maidana too soon? What in the fuck is Roy Jones smoking?

A former three division champion shouldn't be treated like a contender. Broner called himself the best ever, and since couldn't deliver now it was just "too soon" for him to have faced Maidana?

Maidana is not even slick, technical, or fast. Imagine what a guy like Porter, Bradley or Cotto would do to Broner? Too soon...

I agree with Roy! You don't get a split decision with Paulie and think that you're strong enough for Welterweights. Look what happened to Maidana against Alexander. In fact, Broner would've been better off fighting Amir Khan or Danny Garcia @ 147, than to face Maidana. Same goes for Rios. He just lost to Alvarado @ 140, then goes to fight Manny in his first fight @ 147. Not a smart move.

I remember when Roy interviewed Broner for HBO and Roy asked him "What will happen if you lose?" Broner was like "I'll never lose."

He definitely bit off more than he could chew with Maidana. Moved up to WW too fast and fought a beast after he struggled with Malignaggi. He should have played at LW for a little longer.

Yes, too soon. Like Paulie said, they gave him those titles. I'm not saying Broner is the future, but he obviously could have taken a better path to the WW division.

You are right about most of that, but Roy is looking at it through a professional standpoint. But, yeah, Broner did need to back up all that **** he was talking, but got his ass kicked instead.

When you hear other boxers talk about other boxers...depending on who the most liked guy or most hated guy is...they are right. Roy says something about a guy that you don't like, and the pro Roy doesn't know wtf he's talking lmao.

Broner asked for Maidana and he got him. Calculated or not. Broner could've faced Maidana too soon, but that is the price of greatness. Either you start on the road to greatness, or you take an ass whipping. Broner took an ass whipping. He isn't the first or last fighter to underestimate a guy.
