Comments Thread For: Abner Mares Rib Injury - Doubts Surface in Mexico

Several reports in Mexico are casting doubts on the announced rib injury to former three division world champion Abner Mares. Last week Mares disculosed that he injured his rib in sparring and withdrew from a scheduled rematch with WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez.

Last August at the StubHub Center in Carson, Gonzalez stopped Mares in the first round. It was one of the bigger upsets of the year. The rematch was set for February 15th at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. No new date has been announced.

I dont understand, dont these guys need a doctors' note to show they are actually injured? If he really injured his rib, some medical test should show it

Wouldn't be surprised if they just put it on Mayweather's undercard.

Probably wouldn't matter. Miguel Vasquez's got a doctors note saying he got food poising to get out of the Burns fight, but later admitted he wasn't sick and it was about the money not being enough.

Then he should be held responsible and it should be in a contract that if a medical test does not show injury, they should be compensated.

I don't think elementary school rules apply to boxing.

I'm pretty sure it was in the contract. I remember hearing Eddie Hearn saying something about that after hearing about it, but who knows if anything came out of it.

Presumably Mares won't be as ****** and admit it in public though.

Not surprising. This is going to Mayweather's card, Richy confirmed it when he said March 15th was out.

No, I don't think so. The way it works is that fighters doing what they do, have many calls on their doctors. They become used to or prefer a particular doctor, they might become friendly enough that the doctor could be presented witg a pair of ringside tickets for every fight...... The fighter may go to the doctor and say "...it hurts when I move my arm/shoulder/leg/ hip etc. the doctor puts his finger on the directed spot and the fighter says, "Ow, that hurts".

Muscle strains are not Xrayable, and muscle fibre tears cannot be seen, so what is the doctor to do....? He says, wellll.. take it easy and lay off training for 3-4-6 weeks and give it a chance to heal. We can then have a little the****utic exercise regimen. "Oh but doctor", says the simon pure innocent, "I have a fight coming up, what can I do"? Well my boy these things take time to heal, you'd better postpone the fight until I can give you the go-ahead". "Well doctor, if that's the way it has to be...".... Come and see me in a week and we'll have a check-over, and be assured that I will keep a good eye on the injury".. Well doctor, I'd better have a note to show my promoter..." Certainly my boy, here it is, I had it ready".

And that's the ways it goes..my boy.
