Comments Thread For: Ryabinskiy Shows Heart, Will Pay for Magomed’s Recovery

On Nov. 2, Russian heavyweight Magomed Abdusalamov has lost his fight and unbeaten record to fellow undefeated Cuban Ismaikel “Mike” Perez in a brutal two-way shootout. Now, Mago is fighting another battle he cannot afford to lose – for his life – after suffering brain bleeding and a subsequent stroke in a New York hospital, where he arrived after the fight.

Though some signs that are (cautiously) positive, main recovery lies ahead for Magomed, and his treatment – for his family. The world boxing community has been continuously offering its help but the bills have not been fully covered yet, and funds for the fallen warrior are still appreciated.

K2 Promotions and HBO should be picking up the entire bill plus a retirement fund for him.

Ryabinskiy should have showed "heart" just the next day after the fight... Excuses...

I trust that you don't know what "showing heart" really means to the Russians...

(I'd also kindly ask you to use acronyms like GTFO within milieus such as your family or your friends' circle...)

OK so please explain WTF this crap means. In particular what excuses you were talking about:

I'm very sympathetic to this argument, but it's essentially inconceivable. Might as well say the US should have free health care for all. Legally K2 and HBO apparently fulfilled their obligations, though some issues do need to be addressed by the NYSAC (ie. More involvement of the ringside physicians, much higher required levels of insurance cover, improved post fight care and adequate provision of ambulances).

Despite K2 being the main promoter and HBO the broadcaster, responsibility for ensuring the bout is conducted safely lies squarely with the NYSAC. Mago wasn't a K2 fighter and K2 provided the insurance cover required by the SAC - in our money driven world they have no further legal responsibility.

Moral responsibility could be argued, but that surely puts the onus on Magos own promoter / manager and his trainer as the ones who put him the fight in the first place and were most directly responsible for observing his condition during the fight.

It'd be nice to say, 'well HBO and K2 have lots of money so they should pay' (tho that's essentially what Ryabinskiy seems to be doing) - but companies who voluntarily paid excess medical expenses for essentially (in legal terms) random fighters would not remain in business very long.

What's important now is firstly that somehow, anyhow, Magos medical costs are covered or assuaged as far as possible, and secondly that the appropriate lessons are learned and actions implemented to minimise the chances of such a tragedy occurring again.
