Comments Thread For: Ward: Beating Golovkin Won’t ‘Catapult’ Me Past Floyd

Andre Ward will defend his world championship belts Nov. 16 on HBO against unbeaten Edwin Rodriguez in Ontario, Calif., but the chatter has already begun surrounding the identity of the super middleweight king’s next foe.

With the power-punching Gennady Golovkin (28-0, 25 KOs), Adonis Stevenson (22-1, 19 KOs) and Sergey Kovalev (22-0, 20 KOs) coming to the forefront, a win over Rodriguez (24-0, 16 KOs) could propel Ward into a matchup with one of these rising stars next year. However, Ward downplayed the talk.

Ward needs to leave 168 and go fight at 175 period...time to move up you have defeated everyone at 168 worth mentioning

Spoken like a true champ. If he loses to Edwin the rest is irrelevant. One fight at a time.

why move up to a division he's "too small for?" just fight them at catchweights.

He said Virgil Hunter is making the call. He doesn't want him to move up until he starts walking around at 185-190.

Because he used facts and has the right mindset?

Neither of Golovkin, Kovalev or Stevenson are as proven as Froch, Dawson or Kessler who he beat. And Edwin Rodriguez is just as good as those 3 guys being hyped.

They all have some buzz, nothing more. Neither of them have a killer resume. Stevenson has Dawson, very good win in very devastating fashion. That's about it. GG's best win is Macklin at 160. Kovalev's best win is Cleverly.

Ward is getting to that position where every single fighter with a buzz will be pushed as Ward's next nightmare. He'es basically fighting exactly who he's supposed to fight, Edwin Rodriguez. Especially how Rodriguez dispatched of Grachev in one round. This is the fight I want to see.
