Comments Thread For: “Fighting Words” — Pondering 2013’s Fighter of the Year

by David P. Greisman - We don’t know yet who the fighter of the year will be for 2013. We do know who it won’t be, however.

It won’t be any of the winners from the past five years. It won’t be 2012’s winners: Nonito Donaire, who was recognized by the Boxing Writers Association of America, and Juan Manuel Marquez, who was picked by “The Ring” ****zine. Donaire lost a decision to Guillermo Rigondeaux in April, while Marquez came up short on the scorecards against Timothy Bradley last week.

Andre Ward, who won in 2011, will only have one bout this year, his upcoming fight against Edwin Rodriguez. The same can be said for Sergio Martinez, 2010’s winner, who defeated Martin Murray by decision in April and then took off the remainder of the year to recover from injuries; as well as Manny Pacquiao, who won in 2008 and 2009 and whose sole appearance of this year will come against Brandon Rios next month.

It’s easy to decide who won’t be honored as having the best year. What isn’t easy — at least not yet — is finding a standout candidate. There isn’t one yet. There are a handful of nominees, however. From heaviest to lightest, they are light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson, welterweight titleholder/junior middleweight champion Floyd Mayweather, junior welterweight champion Danny Garcia, and flyweight contender Edgar Sosa.

Some cases for recognition are stronger than others. And some cases are contingent on fights still to come.

Stevenson’s fought three times in 2013 and will have his fourth bout this November. He began the year with a March win over Darnell Boone, a tough journeyman with a deceiving record. Theirs was a rematch of a 2010 fight in which Boone knocked Stevenson out, giving him his lone professional loss. This time, Stevenson beat Boone in six. [Click Here To Read More]

It can only be Mayweather. He fought a guy who hadnt lost in 8 years and another 10 years younger without a single loss on his record. Both top contenders and legitimate wins.

      No one else is close.

Maybe Adonis but the 2 big names he beat had already lost in their previous bouts.

Stevenson will deserve it if he beats Bellew but Kovalev should have a decent shout:

Campillo - the real IBF champ KO'd in 3 rounds
        White - KO'd in 3 rounds
Cleverly - the WBO champ KO'd in 4 rounds

with another bout pending - another KO in 3 rounds?

Guerrero hadn't and still hasn't done anything at WW.

Floyd should win; but he's not a fav of many of BWAA so I can see them giving it to Garcia or Stevenson I wouldn't mind Danny getting it.

Garcia struggled with an old Judah and was a little fortunate against Matthysse in a close one. Not really fighter of the year stuff imo.

He fought world class fighters and won I don't think he struggled vs Zab he tired in the late rounds but didn't struggle. vs Lucas he was the underdog and showed he was the goods. Stevenson beat alot of guys coming off loses thats FOTY material.

He was hurt by Judah, and lost every round after that.

I'm not a fan but Stevenson could finish the year stopping the No.1 in the divsion, one top 5 opponent and one top 10 becoming the lineal champ in the process. Time will tell.

Danny won the first 8 rds in that time knocking down Zab bloodying him. Losing the last few rds doesn't equate to struggling to me. Zab has damn near hurt everybody he's fought so I wouldn't that against Danny

To me it's between Mayweather and Bradley.

Garcia beat Zab and Matthysse. But then you have to ask yourself are those fighters better than Guerrero and Canelo. You could make a case for Zab being better than Guerrero (who sucks), but Canelo IMO is def. better than Matthysse. So Mayweather gets the edge.

Then you have to look at Tim Bradley.

Provodnikov's win over Alvarado should help bolster Bradley's chances. Considering he beat him and he beat Marquez. IMO, schooling Marquez was the most impressive win a boxer has had this year.
