Sorry fo long post fight fans

It's a learning experience, though, and a mistake I don't think he'll do again.

The ref saw the whole thing and deduced that Mares was too hurt to continue at that point. He didn't know the time and should not care about that. After a knockdown, his main concern is the fighter's perceived health. That's pretty much it.
Sorry for long post everyone. PLEASE take me in.

Great fight!! Love Mares and Gonzales both, Mares name more famed, but if y'all aint kno, Gonzales is and has BEEN a solid fighter with stone hands.

I however don't agree completely with this statement. Ref's are trained professionals and they should not get flustered over a knockdown, bad or not. A pro ref should have his eyes on the fighter AND a sense of the time left on the clock as this IS boxing and rounds are there for reasons. If Ref lets mares try and stand after 2nd kd and he can't get to feet, by all means. If he can't stand, than yah stop it. BUT if he could make the count, by the time he's up and ref checks his eyes etc the round is a few seconds away from being done.

So all i'm saying is give the "champ" those few seconds and let him try to come out for the next round. If mares was on his back eyes closed, yah stop it, but 15 - 10 secs on clock, give the champ a chance. This reminds me of the Zab Judah vs Kosta Tzu stoppage as Judah was waived off with like 2 seconds on the clock, wobbled and all. Ref's should deff be trained to balance the act of watching a hurt fighter and makin decesions based on things like time remaining at the same time.

FAR FROM A ROBBERY, THAS NOT WHAT IM SAYING, JUST COULD HAVE BEEN HANDLED BETTER AND WE DIDNT GET TO SEE HOW MUCH HEART MARES COULD HAVE AND IF HE COULD HAVE CAME BACK.

Where was good ol STEVE SMOGER when you need him!!! He should ref EVERY title fight, no lie him and Cortez are the truth, they give fighters a fighters chance, more so smoger than Cortez.

I saw the fight 5x already because it's over really fast and your right that's why the ref stopped it because he's looking at Mares eyes and knows he's out of it.

He gave him a chance the with the first knock down, the ref actually gave him a couple extra seconds to respond. The second knock down was worse he was out of it. Very good stoppage.

The ref shouldn't worry about how much time is there left on the clock, his job is to worry about two things : the fighters' health and the rules. That's it. What if the ref tries to gamble like "well there's 5 seconds left in the round, I'll let the guy continue" and the fighter gets caught again and gets permanently injured or worse? Ref shouldn't gamble, just stop a fighter if he doesn't look like he can continue.

One thing I've noticed is that many of the posters who are saying that he just happened to get caught and he'll be back and etc. etc. are the very same people who have been making mockery of Pacquaio who happened to trip face first into a punch that Marquez threw in desperation whilst being beaten and on the way to being stopped.

I suppose you can't please everybody. Or is it the Abraham Lincoln comment about "fooling the people....." Maybe he really meant the people making fools of themselves..... like now on this thread.

I suggest that the next time that Mares fights you bring a little bottle with you and try to get a souvenir "drop of sweat". You can make a shrine of it in a corner of your basement room. I think it was Nero who had a slave with a supply of small vials, to catch Nero's tears when he was overcome by his own poetic brilliance.... If it was good enough for an emperor it should be good enough for you. Sorry, I'm making typos all over the page because i'm still laughing .......

No hard feelings ..just good clean fun.
My god the butt hurt is strong in this one...

They have a rematch clause, but I really don't think Mares should exercise it right now. I'd hate for him to get David Price'd and really do damage to his stock. Truth be told, he might want to consider going back to 122 for the time being.
