The experts weigh in on Bradley-Marquez
RING featherweight champion Mikey Garcia is among the boxing experts consulted by ****** to break down Saturday's 147-pound clash between WBO beltholder Tim Bradley and four-division titlewinner Juan Manuel Marquez.
"I think that it's going to be a very close fight," said Garcia, who will challenge WBO junior lightweight beltholder Roman "Rocky" Martinez as part of a Nov. 9 tripleheader to include Nonito Donaire's featherweight debut in a rematch with Vic Darchynian.
"I think that Bradley has the speed and the hunger, and that he's willing to do everything that it takes to win. On the other hand, I think that Marquez can catch Bradley and hurt him, because he's that great of a counterpuncher."
Besides Manny Pacquiao, who has battled to a draw with and won split- and majority decisions over Marquez (55-6-1, 40 knockouts), Freddie Norwood, Chris John and Floyd Mayweather Jr. have also beaten the Mexican star by decision.
"Movers give Marquez trouble. Freddie Norwood, Chris John, Derrick Gainer, and, of course Floyd Mayweather Jr.," said Rich Marotta, of KFI Radio in Los Angeles.
"Those who come to JMM pay the price: Juan Diaz, Michael Katsidis, and, to some extent, Manny Pacquaio. Should Tim want to slug and please the fans, it will be exciting, but he'll play into Juan Manuel's hands."
Garcia believes that Bradley (30-0, 12 KOs), his managerial stablemate with Cameron Dunkin, would be wise not to stand in front of Marquez.
"I wouldn't be surprised to see Bradley come out and box his way to a 12-round decision," said Garcia. "I really don't pick any sides, but I just think that it's going to be a very, very good fight."
Bradley has an impressivie resume, including three opponents -- IBF junior welterweiight titleholder Lamont Peterson, IBF welterweight beltholder Devon Alexander, and Argentina's Luis Carlos Abregu -- who were unbeaten before falling by decision to Bradley.
Bradley also dethroned Kendall Holt by unanimous decision for the WBO's 140-pound belt in April of 2009, rising from two knockdowns to do so.
"Every adversity that Bradley seems to face in the ring, he seems to find a way to overcome it," said Tim Smith of ******.com. "I don't know what it is about him, but he just seems to have this incredible survivor skill and instinct."
Bradley also owns a unanimous decision from July of 2007 over current IBF lightweight titleholder Miguel Vazquez, whose other losses were by split- and unanimous decision to former RING junior middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez.
After facing Abregu as a welterweight in July of 2010, and then vanquishing Alexander as a junior welterweight in 2011, Bradley scored knockdowns in the fifth, sixth and final rounds of an eighth-round knockout of former Olympic gold medalist and ex-beltholder Joel Casamayor.
Casamayor was stopped for only the second time in his career by Bradley, whose next fight was against Pacquiao. Still, in a firefight, Garcia thinks that Marquez's edge in finishing power could be the difference.
"If I did side with maybe one scenario for someone, I would maybe side a little more with Marquez as the winner," said Garcia. ""Still, this is a very, very difficult where you have to pick a winner. I see this as almost a toss-up."
The same appears to be true for the 32 boxing insiders polled about Bradley-Marquez, the results of which are below.
Marc Abrams,
Juan Manuel Marquez KO Tim Bradley: I like Juan Manuel Marquez to win by late stoppage over Tim Bradley in what could be a very entertaining bout.
Record: 1-1 [Last pick: Alvarez SD 12 Mayweather]

Juan Manuel Marquez KO Tim Bradley: Tim Bradley has always displayed a questionable chin. After engaging in a vicious war with Ruslan Provodnikov, it will be interesting to see how much was taken out of him.
Those two things, coupled with Juan Manuel Marquez' transformed body and improved punching power, have convinced me JMM will score yet another stunning knockout on HBO PPV.
Marquez is an expert counter-puncher. If Bradley tries to slug with Marquez the way he did with Provodnikov, it's lights out for Bradley.
I see a very competitive fight ending when a Marquez right-hand bomb catches Bradley coming in, somewhere in the late rounds.
Record: 9-5 [Klitschko late KO Povetkin]

Tim Bradley SD 12 or late KO Juan Manuel Marquez: This is a difficult fight to assess with certainty, which means it is meaningful. But the greater meaning in this contest is against Timothy Bradley. The scalp of Juan Manuel Marquez would be a proud one in the American's record book.
It will be testy, technical, and could come down to grit and determination. That vim, for me, lies on the side of Bradley, slightly inferior in technique to Marquez, but hungrier. I don't believe that Bradley beat Manny Pacquiao, but if he sticks to a rugged game plan, he could out-muscle Marquez in this fight.
I have a hunch that Bradley may even be able to catch the Mexican late in the fight. Fight the wrong way, nonetheless, and the legendary Mexican could make Bradley look like a stiff. Bradley by late TKO, or split points decision.

Norm Frauenheim, THE RING ****zine,
Timothy Bradley SD 12 Juan Manuel Marquez: It's tempting to say that this one winds up as a draw. Whatever happens, it'll be close, which could mean controversy. Barring a head-butt or some other unforeseen craziness, however, the edge here goes to Tim Bradley for all of the intangibles.
Bradley has the look of a fighter with renewed confidence and energy. The bitter aftermath of his decision over Manny Pacquiao is gone. All of that, of course, can crash faster than Pacquiao did if Juan Manuel Marquez lands another big punch.
The guess is that Bradley is too clever to let that happen. Remember, Marquez, now 40, was losing to Pacquaio when his right hand landed like lightning. Bradley figures to be a lot more cautious than Pacquiao ever has been with tactics that will score enough points for a narrow win.
Record: 18-7 [Chavez Jr. TKO 9 Vera]
Jeffrey Freeman,
Tim Bradley UD 12 Juan Manuel Marquez: This fight is such a toss up. It's hard to pick a winner when such a clear path to victory exists for both fighters. For Tim Bradley, that path, if he can still walk it straightly, is to out-box Juan Manuel Marquez and avoid a firefight.
For Marquez, that path, if he can get Bradley to walk the walk on it with him, is to engage "The Desert Storm" in close quarter combat and land counters. Which fighter will be most able to impose his advantage on the other? The pick here is Bradley.
When he wants to be, Bradley is a very slick boxer and Marquez is a 40 year old warrior who can be out-boxed. If Bradley can check his fighting ego at the door and stay focused on winning the match, and not necessarily new fans, his path to victory is the one most likely to be walked on by both boxers. Bradley wins by competitive but unanimous decision.
Record: 14-8 [Mayweather W 12 Alvarez]

Juan Manuel Marquez UD 12 Tim Bradley: This is a fabulous showdown between a living legend and a two weight world champion who still yearns for respect. Tim Bradley’s main assets are hand speed and movement, but I can see Juan Manuel Marquez neutralizing those advantages with a perfectly-timed counter jab and crisp body shots.
The Mexican has sublime timing, and I just can't envision "Desert Storm" Bradley having continued success against a ring genius like Marquez. "Dinamita" may have had trouble with movers in the past, but he had no motivation against Chris John and no chance against the bigger man in Floyd Mayweather.
Marquez's confidence is sky high coming off the Manny Pacquiao knockout, and the prospect of a world title in a fifth weight class has him oozing motivation. The fight will be competitive, but there will be no doubt who has won at the end of 12 action-packed rounds. We just need the judges to see the same fight that everyone else did.
Record: 9-5 [Klitschko TKO 10 Povetkin]
Lee Groves, ******.com
Timothy Bradley UD 12 Juan Manuel Marquez: Tim Bradley's volume will be the key to victory, for it will allow him to jam Juan Manuel Marquez's sophisticated radar and keep the 40-year-old master counter-puncher overly focused on defense.
Marquez's spectacular one-punch knockout of Manny Pacquiao masked the fact that, to that point, he was being beaten rather soundly. Marquez's face was a mask of blood, and despite scoring the third-round knockdown, he still seemed to be adversely affected by Pacquiao'ss speed.
Bradley showed against Pacquiao that his speed is at least comparable to the Pac Man's, which is a good sign for "The Desert Storm." Like his younger brother, Rafael Marquez, Marquez's defensive numbers have been slipping as of late, which tells me his reflexes have eroded somewhat. If Marquez is to win, he needs those reflexes and he can't afford to fall too much in love with his power.
Bradley has the youth, grit and volume to take full advantage and if he doesn't let Marquez's knowledge and experience intimidate him into a waiting game -- as was the case with Canelo Alvarez against Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Tavoris Cloud against Bernard Hopkins -- he should win a fairly solid decision.

Timothy Bradley SD 12 Juan Manuel Marquez: I hate this fight. Reason being is I don't know which Timothy Bradley is going to show up. Chances are, the Bradley that fought Ruslan Provodnikov has been locked away in a dark cellar and will not be allowed to come out and play against Juan Manuel Marquez.
That's good for Bradley, because Marquez just loves for opponents to come at him, with Juan Diaz, Michael Katsidis and, of course, Manny Pacquiao, being perfect examples. So the question becomes who will be the aggressor in this fight? Bradley does everything good, not great. Marquez is a superb counter-puncher.
But something in my gut tells me that Bradley is going to be tough to deal with over the course of 12 rounds. Bradley has a massive chip on his shoulder, and just seems to want this more. Not to say Marquez doesn't, but after flattening Pacquiao, beating Bradley is more consolation than grand prize.
I expect Bradley to make this ugly with lots of infighting and stuffing Marquez's attempts to counter early on. Marquez will adjust after being down on the cards early, but Bradley will have to be smart and stink out the final third of the fight to get the nod.
If it's a war, I have to go with Marquez. But I think Joel Diaz and Bradley are smarter than that and will win a good, but relatively ugly fight.

Juan Manuel Marquez SD 12 over Timothy Bradley: I would not be the least bit surprised if Tim Bradley won. The determined welterweight champion relishes playing the underdog role and always finds a way to win, even when he clearly loses. That said, I expect Juan Manuel Marquez to be just a little sharper and a little better than Bradley, despite the fact that he turned 40 in August.
It'll be a very close fight full of impressive moments for both boxers. But the Ruslan Provodnikov fight had to have taken some sort of toll on Bradley. Marquez is well-rested, full of confidence following his career-defining win over Pacquiao and still such an effective counter-puncher that he'll beat Bradley by just enough to get the decision.
Record: 14-4 [Mayweather UD 12 Alvarez]

Juan Manuel Marquez KO Tim Bradley: I see the Juan Manuel Marquez versus Tim Bradley fight as more competitive now than one year ago not because Marquez has finally aged, but because Bradley left his prime in the ring last fight with Ruslan Provodnikov similar to the way Meldrick Taylor did during his loss to Julio Cesar Chavez Sr.
Bradley even said he took some time to recover his faculties after the fight, which left him with slurred speech, for a time. I am slightly fearful for Bradley's health, with him being in with a hard-hitting, counter-puncher like Marquez. I am predicting Marquez in a good competition that will last until Marquez gets him by late-round knockout.

Ryan Maquinana, CSNBAYAREA/krikya360.com
Tim Bradley W 12 Juan Manuel Marquez: This fight is as close to a pick 'em as we'll see all year. Despite Juan Manuel Marquez's recent power surge and Timothy Bradley's new found taste for warfare, we might get a tactical affair on Saturday.
Marquez is the better counter-puncher and technician, but Bradley is also capable of controlling the pace with his superior speed and movement. In a fight that could go either way on the cards, I see Bradley narrowly outworking Marquez for his third consecutive and controversial decision win.
Record: 12-7 [Klitschko TKO 10 Povetkin]
Rich Marotta, KFI Radio, Los Angeles
Juan Manuel Marquez W 12 Tim Bradley: It's an interesting puzzle of a fight depending almost entirely on how Tim Bradley approaches the bout. It is Tim who will determine how the fight is fought. He is quite versatile on how he can fight, and is adept at boxing and moving, or exchanging.
It is a lot better for Bradley if he chooses to move and pick his spots rather than slug it out it the way he did against Ruslan Provodnikov. Juan Manuel Marquez, himself, has the ability to adapt to either strategy, but he'll find it markedly more difficult if Bradley boxes.
Movers give Marquez trouble. Freddie Norwood, Chris John, Derrick Gainer, and, of course Floyd Mayweather Jr. Those who come to JMM pay the price: Juan Diaz, Michael Katsidis, and, to some extent, Manny Pacquaio. Should Tim want to slug and please the fans, it will be exciting, but he'll play into Juan Manuel's hands.
I think Bradley will choose a measured pace, and a simple boxing strategy. The fight will be competitive and close with both fighters matching skills. I see it more of a chess match than a punch-out. Marquez will have enough left in the tank to score a close, 12-round decision victory.
Record: 16-7 [Chavez Jr. TKO 10 Vera]
Kieran Mulvaney, ESPN.com
Tim Bradley W 12 Juan Manuel Marquez: I'm finding this one of the toughest fights to call all year. I think a lot depends on Tim Bradley's approach. If he decides to fight aggressively, he leaves himself open to Juan Manuel Marquez counters which, not being the quickest of boxers, he'll have a hard time avoiding.
Add to that the damage done by Ruslan Provodnikov, and it could end up being a Marquez stoppage win. If Bradley dials back his offense a little, then it becomes more of a chess match, and Bradley, if he’s clever, may be able to draw Marquez onto counters of his own.
Marquez is the more naturally skilled fighter, he is the more versatile fighter, and there have to be concerns about Bradley's health. And yet, for some reason, with very little confidence indeed, I see Bradley following the right plan and coming away with a close and possibly controversial decision.

Juan Manuel Marquez KO 9 Tim Bradley: I've got Juan Manuel Marquez winning by a ninth-round stoppage. Marquez is the more superior fighter and he's a boxer who has been in with much better opponents. I watch boxing all of the time, and Tim Bradley should already have two losses on his record, if you ask me.

Tim Bradley W 12 Juan Manuel Marquez: To me, this is about as tough a decision as soup or salad. Aask me again in two days. Don't like what Tim Bradley said about his post-fight condition after last fight. However, Bradley is younger, and relatively fresher.
Juan Manuel Marquez is a sure Hhall of Famer, but not that big naturally, and he was losing the Manny Pacquiao fight. I don't think he can duplicate that ending again, at least not against Bradley. Tim's hand speed will be the difference.

Juan Manuel Marquez TKO 11 Timothy Bradley: This is a toss-up fight. Juan Manuel Marquez is stronger, but Timothy Bradley is more athletic. Marquez has problems with fighters who can move.
Bradley barely survived a life-and-death encounter with tough Ruslan Provodnikov last March. Marquez has developed more power in the later stages of his career.
I can see Bradley getting off to a lead in the fight by using his speed, but eventually Marquez will rock him. Marquez will rally late and stop Bradley.

Juan Manuel Marquez KO 10 Tim Bradley: I think that Juan Manuel Marquez is motivated by pressure that he has on him, and I think that Tim Bradley received a gift decision when he fought Manny Pacquiao.
I think that the Pacquiao fight took a lot out of Bradley, and that Bradley is going to want to prove, yet again, to the world that he can stand in there with the best pound-for-pound fighters out there.
Because Bradley still is feeling that pressure to prove himself, that's what is going to make him come to Marquez, and I think that he'll get caught and that he'll get knocked out.
Record: 1-0 [Stevenson KO 6 Cloud]

Juan Manuel Marquez KO 6 Tim Bradley: This is an excellent fight on paper and arguably the most difficult to pick this year. After Juan Manuel Marquez beat Manny Pacquiao last December, I remember feeling that he had gotten lucky and that he had very little left in the gas tank.
Then, in March, after Tim Bradley barely beat Ruslan Provodnikov, I remember feeling the same way about him. I also remember feeling, after both Marquez;s and Bradley;s most recent fights, that the type of fight they were just in was so brutal that it probably shortened their careers significantly.
So, to me, this comes down to who is less shopworn: Bradley or Marquez? After much internal debate, I just can't pick Bradley knowing that he felt the effects of his fight with Provodnikov for months afterward. That's not a good sign for him as he goes up against a highly-motivated Marquez.
Marquez is a boxer who, by the way, who has come under scrutiny for potential use of some alternative methods in his preparations. Would I be shocked if Bradley was able to out-box his opponent long enough to secure a decision win? No.
Boxers have bounced back from the type of war he was just in, but it's a rare occasion when they do. If Provodnikov could concuss Bradley, I have to assume Marquez should be able to complete the job.

Tim Bradley MD 12 Juan Manuel Marquez: This a very tough fight to pick. I am going with Tim Bradley in this one. I feel he will dig down deep and find a way to force his will on Juan Manuel Marquez. I think Tim will be buzzed a few times.
But if he finds a way to keep the fight in close quarters, he should have success. It wouldn't surprise me to see Marquez win controversially on the cards but I'm leaning towards Bradley by majority decision.

Tim Bradley W 12 Juan Manuel Marquez: I can't remember a tougher pick in recent fights. I want to say Tim Bradley will eke out a decision because of his speed and mobility, but I'm not sure what his brutal fight against Ruslan Provodnikov has taken out of him.
Sometimes fighters are never the same after a war like that. I'm going to stick with my hunch, though. I think Bradley will go back to boxing instead of brawling and win a very close decision over Juan Manuel Marquez.

Tim Bradley W 12 Juan Manuel Marquez: I think Tim Bradley wins, absolutely. I think Bradley out-boxes Juan Manuel Marquez. I think that Bradley will be smarter and that he won't fight Marquez the same way that he fought Provodnikov.
So I think that Bradley has a hell of a chance of winning a decision against Marquez. I think that it will be a tight fight. I think that Marquez is a good counter-puncher.
But Marquez was behind against Manny Pacquiao until he landed that knockout punch, so I think that the speed that Bradley displayed against Pacquiao, that speed will allow him to out-maneuver Marquez.

Tim Bradley SD 12 Juan Manuel Marquez: This is a tough call for me and it's a tough fight, but I think that I'm going to go with Tim Bradley, and for no other reason than that he seems to be the ultimate survivor.
Every adversity that Bradley seems to face in the ring, he seems to find a way to overcome it. I don't know what it is about him, but he just seems to have this incredible survivor skill and instinct.
I think that it's going to be a split-decision for Bradley over Juan Manuel Marquez, sort of like the one that he had over Manny Pacquiao. That's the the only edge that I can give Bradley over Marquez is that he the ultimate survivor.

Tim Bradley W 12 Juan Manuel Marquez: Tim Bradley is a lot like Danny Garcia. Bradley is always doubted, and all he does is win. Bradley works hard and trains hard--and clean.
I didn't like Juan Manuel Marquez's victory over Manny Pacquiao. Bradley will outwork Marquez, who won't have the kind of power he suddenly found against Pacquiao. It should be a fun fight.

Juan Manuel Marquez UD 12 Tim Bradley: I see Juan Manuel Marquez in a pretty tough fight. Tim Bradley is desperate for attention and respect that he didn't gain after the Manny Pacquiao victory, and coming in with that type of emotion is going to push him hard.
I do think though that skills and science negate a lot of the emotion and determination. In a good fight, I have Marquez finding enough holes to punch through to come away with a unanimous decision victory.

Tim Bradley W 12 Juan Manuel Marquez: I'm picking Timothy Bradley by a decision here. Since it's in Las Vegas, expect it to be a split or majority decision.
I'm making this pick based on the belief that Bradley can fight the kind of fight that negates Juan Manuel Marquez's legendary counter-punching approach.
If Bradley can fight a smart fight, where he sticks and moves from the outside, then smother and make it ugly down the stretch to wear down the older Marquez, I think he wins.
I think Marquez is a fight or two from going completely over the hill, and this may be the fight. But Marquez still is a great fighter and will be dangerous all the way.

Juan Manuel Marquez TKO 5 Timothy Bradley: The entire boxing world is intrigued to see how much Tim Bradley actually has left after his war with Ruslan Provodnikov in which Bradley was hurt bad several times. Bradley has stated that it took two months for him to stop slurring his speech after the fight.
Juan Manuel Marquez, on the other hand, has some momentum and a ton of confidence after knocking Manny Paquiaou out cold. Despite his undefeated record, Bradley is ripe to be beaten.
Marquez is a sharp counter-puncher who won't have to worry about anything explosive coming back as Bradley lacks significant power. I see Marquez hurting Bradley early and having the killer instinct to finish the fight in the mid-rounds.
Record: 9-4 [Klitschko UD 12 Povetkin]

Tim Bradley SD 12 Juan Manuel Marquez: Nobody really knows how well Tim Bradley has recovered from his concussion until he steps into the ring. Bradley took some severe punishment in beating Ruslan Provodnikov, struggling defensively while trying to prove he can fight as well as he can box.
As Manny Pacquiao painfully discovered, Juan Manuel Marquez is as good a counter-puncher as there is in the sport. But Bradley will not get caught up in a Provodnikov-type of war against Marquez and should avoid most of those counters. Bradley has an indomitable will to win, and he will prevail in this fight.

Timothy Bradley W 12 Juan Manuel Marquez: In a fight with many intangibles, both guys are adept at boxing. But as evidenced in their most recent fights, they can also fight, and know how to hang in there when hurt. Both are among the biggest warriors in the sport.
You wonder just how long Juan Manuel Marquez can maintain the very high standard he has over the past 20 years. Now at 40 years of age, Marquez has yet to show any real decline.
However, in this fight, I'm going with Tim Bradley to win by the smallest of margins, out-boxing Marquez to win a close unanimous, maybe split decision in what promises to be an exciting encounter between two of the best in the business.

Dave Wilcox, guest/fan, Placentia, Calif.
Juan Manuel Marquez KO 11 Tim Bradley: I have always been a big Tim Bradley fan and respect him a great deal, but I think he will finally hit the wall in this bout against Juan Manual Marquez. Bradley has been playing chicken with being knocked out for a few fights now, and I think this time Marquez will do the number on him.
I look for Bradley to come out fast and box well and most likely have a good lead on JMM. You'll start to see a change of body language from Timothy around the sixth round as Marquez continues to quietly put a beating on Bradley. My prediction is that Marquez will get Bradley out of there in the 11th round by way of Knockout.
While watching this one, I think we will all be reminded of the great classic bout between Julio Cesar Chavez and Meldrick Taylor. Plenty of heart and determination will be with Bradley, but the heavy hands of the veteran, Marquez will prove to be too much for him.

And Marquez is about as close to JCC as we've ever had IMO, at least as how he relates to being a great fighter in Mexican boxing history, as their styles aren't that similar.
