Comments Thread For: Brian Magee is Banned For 6 Months Over PED Use

Belfast boxer Brian Magee is serving a six-month ban for use of the banned stimulant Oxilofrine, the UK Anti-Doping Agency has revealed.

The 38-year-old Magee tested positive in the wake of his third round defeat to Mikkel Kessler in a WBA super-middleweight title challenge in Denmark in December.

Jamaican sprinters Asafa Powell and Sherone Simpson both tested positive for the same stimulant following the Jamaican national trials last month.

Magee said he feared his career was over when he was informed of the positive test in February. Having identified a supplement as a possible cause, he was handed a retrospective ban which is due to expire next week.

I actually believe him, sometimes that drug is added to over the counter stuff as a Decongestant (daytime cold medicine, non drowsy). It is also considered a stimulant though similar to caffeine, but stronger, which is probably why it is banned.

Everyone who gets caught has an excuse, and it seems like those handing out the bans believe the excuses more often than not.

Mistake or not, I still think it should be an automatic 2 year ban (or at least 1 year). How are other boxers going to learn to be careful if the worst they can expect for not being careful is 6 months? Mickey Bey didn't even get that.

Wow, took a long time to hear this news...

Oxilofrine is/was hard to detect but there is a way to test a sample for it. Maybe there will be more positive tests in the next months.

But by the way: How is Soliman's positive test on oxilofrine not mentioned in the article...

That sentence is harsher because it was his second offense in that state.

Magee strikes me as being an honest dude who made a mistake and the comments from the UK Anti-Doping folk seem to reflect that as well....
