You can't attack the spine. But, this was in Nicaragua. It may have been more anything goes. Rules do vary from place to place and promotion to promotion. Spine strikes are very dangerous though.

Why is the knee controversial? It was an MMA fight, it isn't like he kneed the guy in the head.

He was 20 pounds overweight (his opponent was 2 pounds underweight) and fought an 0-0 guy, who he kneed in the spine.

"They ruled it a legal blow." It's Nicaragua, and it's Mayorga. Of course they did. The guy he fought wasn't even Nicaraguan to boot.

It looked perfectly legal to me. It wasn't like he drove his knee into the guys spine.
