To what extent does Donaire get some of the blame for making the fight "not exciting"? He threw LESS than Rigo. And it wasn't because of his "shoulder" or "lack of preparation" or any other of the various excuses I've heard. He was flat out terrified about what was coming back at him ever time he threw a punch.

I can't remember the last time I've seen a Top 5 p4p guy in his prime not be able to do anything he wanted in the ring like that. He wasn't "pressing the action" or cutting off the ring or even throwing punches. He did absolutely nothing in there. Rigondeaux took EVERYTHING away and looked leagues above Nonito.
Can't say I knew too much about Rigondeaux before the fight, so I'll admit his cowardly approach did surprise me.

But you couldn't be more wrong about why the punch stats were so low. Punch numbers from many of Rigondeaux's fights reveal the same trend we saw develop in his fight with Donaire. Rigondeaux runs from the opposition, waiting for them to become frustrated and overcommit themselves.

When a fighter runs so blatantly, as Rigondeaux does, punch numbers are going to be down. The average 122 pound fighter throws 61 punches per round. Rigondeaux often averages half that, and was true to that low punch output this last Saturday.

It's clear that Rigondeaux has no regard whatsoever for the fans or the entertainment element of boxing, and he flat out admitted that before and after the fight.

The reason Donaire was, and is, a big name and big draw, is because he's committed to entertaining the fans. The 122 pound division has rarely enjoyed any kind of significant exposure, but Donaire brought that to the division. He understood that it's not enough to merely win the fight. No, fighters have a greater responsibility than that.

Donaire is now moving up, and with that move, the 122 pound division will once again drift off into obscurity. And Guillermo Rigondeaux offers nothing to stop that.

        Sad but true, my friend.....

Not really. If a fighter isn't marketable, he's nothing, no matter how many fights or titles he wins.

That why Bob Arum said the following after the fight:

"I'm 81 years old and I'm probably going to have to do the best promoting job I've ever done," he said, laughing. ... "It was the exact opposite of the last two HBO fights we had. It was not a very engaging fight. ... When Rigondeaux stands and fights, the [expletive] has a lot of power and a lot of skill, but running the way he does really makes it not a watchable fight. I had Donaire up by one point heading into the 11th, but clearly, Rigondeaux won the last two rounds. Clearly."

What I think you should do is do a little research and, perhaps, you'll see how other come forward fighters were able to get to slick fighters and even stop them. Stop looking for excuses for your idol because most of us are not buying into your nonsense. What did you want Rigo to do....stay right in front of Donaire and just trade punches??? Sorry, but that's not what boxing is all about. I'm tired of these so called fans of boxing crying every time their boxer/idol doesn't or is unable to win a fight. Like their idol is some sort of a God and there is no way they can loose. Man...get the hell out of here with that!!!! DONAIRE LOST PLAIN AND SIMPLE AND ONLY HE IS TOO BLAME!!!! ENOUGH WITH ALL THE DAMN CRYING!!!!!!

Did you even read my post? I said Donaire lost and that I agreed with that decision.

I also pointed out, however, that Donaire lost nothing in terms of marketability and appeal, and that's just as true.

Rigondeaux, on the other hand, got major exposure for the first time in his professional career, and the result was a crowd of booing fans and a very concerned promoter.

Guess those people are just haters too, right?

I don't blame Rigondeaux for using a lot of movement and taking the more defensive role of the two, as that was really his only shot of winning.

However, his movement was often blatant running, which is cowardly, and he rarely ever punched in combination or with any conviction.

Bottom line: fans don't like fighters that don't, at all, fight. It's called boxing, but it's really the Fight Game.

I see. Well, I'm not an Alt, and I'm here to discuss the sport of boxing. Can't promise my opinions will always make other users happy, but who could promise such a thing?
