The biggest events get the best fight dates to maximise profits. Look at the dates Oscar fought on in the 90's and early 2000's. He got the Cinco de mayo's because of his draw but the other traditional big fight weekends were taken by american heavyweights.
People forget that boxing was on an NFL/NBA level until the late 90's, not the fringe sport that it is today.
Not knocking Floyd, he's had an incredible run, but hasn't had to compete with the level of stars that Oscar did when he was coming up.

its not a mismatch.canelo is younger, big, and stronger.but mayweather knows how to beat him.its not a mismatch by no means.

On Main event fight? on what HBO common folk dont know Austin Trout from Rainbow trout and Canelo is only a budding star, Mexicans and die hd fight fans know him to common American people he is the red head young kid than can fight and beat Shane Mosley, h has fought no one and is being built up but hes never do ppv number, and he is not FLoyd would did over a million fighting no name Victor Ortiz. so stop comparing Canelo to a man who has done hundreds of millions PPv is his lifetime. FLoyd is a star, anyone who fights on his cards will be the undercard

That doesn't answer the question. Evander Holyfield wasn't competing for Cinco De Mayo.

Let me slow it down for you numbnuts. The argument was made that Floyd has had higher PPV numbers overall than Oscar.
While definitely true, it doesn't factor in the fact that when Oscar was doing it Welterweights and Junior middleweights weren't the biggest draws in the sport at the time, heavyweights were and their PPV numbers dwarf even what Floyd is doing.
Floyd has the pick of all the prime fight dates, no other boxers would dare challenge him or put a fight on the same night as him. If Floyd were doing it when Oscar was he would be competing for dates with the likes of Tyson and Lewis. Evander or Tyson may not have wanted Cinco de drinco, but there a lot of other big fight dates in the summer and late fall they would have had dibs on over a de lay hoya at the time. Not to mention the fact that Oscar or anyone couldn't charge $60-70 for an HD broadcast at the time.
