Become VERY good at fighting on the inside Ricky Hatton style.
The only way to beat Ward is to beat him at his own game. If you're a heavy puncher, he will close the distance on you and force you to fight on the inside. Well, when that happens, you're going to have to know how to be physical and still land punches in the process. It's going to be ugly, but that's how you beat him.

Have your sparring partners attempt to deliberately headbutt (with protective gear on of course), and learn to evade them and to counter the butts with a punch.
Also learn to avoid the illegal punches he throws off the break. Do the same to him, even though his home ref will penalize you for it while letting the "Son of Goat" do it as much as he wants.
And try to learn to deal with Ward's illegal hitting while holding.
