Comments Thread For: Ricky Hatton on Near Suicide: I Had a Knife at My Wrists!

Ricky Hatton has revealed how close he came to suicide during his three-year break from boxing.

The 34-year-old Briton, who is about to relaunch his career with a fight next month, slipped into depression after a second-round knockout by Filipino Manny Pacquiao in his last fight in May 2009.

Hatton, who won world titles at welterweight and light-welterweight, says that, during the worst bouts of the illness, his girlfriend had to take a knife from him to stop him hurting himself.

"I was near to a nervous breakdown; depression, suicidal," he told BBC Radio Five Live on Sunday.

Wow. We rarely know what really goes on in the lives of people we consider "successful". I wish Ricky all the best. His emotional state must've been incredibly painful for him to act in such a way. I hope he's put the worst behind him.

When I saw the footage of Hatton snorting coke I knew he was in a really bad way mentally. I don't think he is emotionally right now either just better.

It sucks when you get to that point in your life, you know its all mentally rather then your environmental, why cause The hitman is rich. But money cant buy happiness

Hope his mind is 100% now. Cause boxing is serious but never should drive you to that level.

This is a lifestyle, I remeber when I was 100% sure i couldent box anymore I felt like WTF what now, but life goes on and you find other things you can be great at.
