Alvarado needs to learn some defensive skills. He had the philly shell guard but none of the movement required to make it effective. Rios could not miss.
Rios, whilst at times he did leave himself open and get caught, for the most part was covering up well and blocking, slipping, and rolling a lot of Alvarado's shots. Alvarado was having to work twice as hard to land the same amount of leather as Rios and it was a pace no human can sustain - 140 punches in the 5th round, I believe. At the same time, Rios was regularly targetting the body, whilst Alvarado was mostly head hunting, and eventually Alvarado just came undone completely.
He reckons the fight should not have been stopped - but when do you stop a fight? His hands were down, he was out of his feet, and being held up by the ropes. He was about to take a long nap on the canvas and incur some permanent brain damage. The ref saved him from himself. It's not like Rios was missing, like Alvarado was moving or blocking, or even like Alvarado was throwing back. The point of no return had passed; Alvarado was finished, and when he watches the tape back he'll likely realise it.
