Comments Thread For: Michael Dokes, Former Champ, Passes Away at 54

Former world heavyweight champion Michael "Dynamite" Dokes, blessed by natural boxing talent but cursed by a wicked addiction to *******, died early Sunday morning at his family home in Akron, Ohio.

The ex-WBA champ, who served almost 10 years in a Nevada prison for a horrendous assault on a woman he lived with, was born on Aug. 10, 1958, and died on August 12 at the age of 54. Dokes was battered in recent months by cancer.

Dokes' death was confirmed to me by his lifelong pal and cornerman/adviser Sterling "Mac" McPherson.

His fight with Holyfield is one of my favorites. Brutal, ferocious bout.

Lol, well, Dokes was in trouble. Holyfield landed a huge left hook to send Dokes reeling back to the ropes. Looked like it was a right hand more then a head butt from certain camera angles.

The Racket Squad: Mike Dokes: The Tough Road Home

And so it ends for Mr. Dokes.
I saw him fight live on four occasions and spent some time with him after his release.
Let it be known that he lived as best his devil's would allow and fought the best fight he knew how.

The fight that won him the title against Mike Weaver was defining.
Gerrie Coetzee gave him hell in Ohio but Mike fought like the pro he was.
He gave Evander his finest hour in the best Heavyweight contest of that decade, the 1980's.

It is my contention that the Dokes who fought Holyfield could have beaten any of the current crop of 200 plus pound charactars who frequent today's scene.

He lived a very hard 54 seasons.
              Sleep well my friend.

              You will be missed.

              Later Champ.

He was a warrior, his fight against Holyfield is the best HW fight of the 80's no doubt.
