Comments Thread For: Days Before Bute… A ****y Froch Channels Joe Calzaghe

By Lyle Fitzsimmons - It’s official. I really dig Carl Froch.

I’ve seen him fight a few times in a few years – in both wins and losses – and he’s always reminded me a little bit of another slick U.K. super middleweight elitist, one Joe Calzaghe.

I got on the Calzaghe bandwagon just before his career-erupting defeat of Jeff Lacy and rode it through wins over Mikkel Kessler and Bernard Hopkins, so seeing another guy from that part of the world climbing the 168-pound ladder automatically warrants my extra attention.

Full disclosure… I was the idiot who thought Roy Jones Jr. would beat him.

That notwithstanding, one of the things I always admired about Calzaghe, other than the fact that he shares a March 23 birthday with my son, was the smooth-talking assassin persona he unfailingly displayed before fights – regardless of their opponent, significance or stage.

The dude talked the talk, and – be it in Cardiff for Kessler, Las Vegas for Hopkins or New York for the swan song battering of Jones – he walked the walk.

Now, heading into what’s arguably his own career’s most vital night – on home turf against an unbeaten belt-holder amid a sea of down-the-line money shots – Froch strides in with the same ****y assuredness of that very Welshman who never did get beat.

Even though, only five months ago… he lost 24 of 36 rounds on the cards to Andre Ward.

“I’m switched on. I’m ready,” Froch said. “And I’m not licking my wounds. I’m not sulking. I’m not feeling sorry for myself because I lost my last fight. I’m really not.

“I’m taking confidence from that loss. I know where I went wrong and I know what I need to do to put it right. And I can beat Lucian Bute. I’m going to be a three-time world champion. [Click Here To Read More]

Froch is always dropping in 'legend' in interviews next to his name.

Getting dominated whilst your still in your pomp by another fighter at the same weight isn't the stuff legends are made from.

Losing to Mikkel Kessler who is an elite fighter of the division but isn't a fighter that anybody that deserves 'legend status' at that weight should lose to - once they are, or have been - a fully fledged World Champ.

Froch is desperate to be known as some sort of legend but, the reality is he was a good fighter in his division but has never been close to no:1 in his weight class let alone 2 weight classes.

Arguably - he is the joint 2nd, or even 3rd best fighter in the division he operates in and whilst it is a strong division with good fighters - Ward, Kessler, AA etc its not like Hagler, Leonard and Hearns quality is it.

CV - scrapped past both a shot MW in Taylor and a novice in Dirrell and lost to Kessler and dominated by Ward.

Decent over Pascal (but even a 47 Hopkins managed that) and AA.

And even if he beats Bute - he's fought nobody beaten nobody. If he beats Bute - then Bute is all hype (I think Bute is all hype) and will hold my hands up if he deals with Froch in a comfortable fashion.

Bute has to face and beat a dangerous, live guy in his pomp, so a win over him doesn't hold much water. However, if he beats Froch - who is a respected elite fighter then the next guy that faces Bute gets props.

I remember Froch saying before the Ward fight the a New York Cop said to him - are you Carl Froch the legend?

First of all - you don't say things like that, secondly, I reckon he made it up as he is desperate for people to talk about him in that manner.

The legend Carl Froch (in his own lunchtime) subsequently went on to get dominated and schooled by Andre Ward.

What Froch has to realise is - it isn't up to him to decide that he is a legend or not and is cringeworthy and smacks of desperation every time he says it.

There's a lot to like and admire about Froch - An elite fighter of his division he has been - a legend, purrrrleeease - do me a favour.

If every fighter had the same mindset as Froch and actually faced of with the best fighters in their respected division, Boxing would probably become the biggest sport in the world again.

He sure is a rare breed among the best Boxing offers us today.

If you don't respect Froch, go watch another sport.

Froch is knocking Bute out, and i think that would solidify him as a hall of gamer. May be not the best but he fights the best

How can people not respect a guy like Froch? He does what we as fans expect from a prizefighter - fight the best, duck nobody and give the fans what they want to see.

As someone else said above - boxing needs more guys like the Cobra.
