Failure of Mexican Amateur System?

In the new Ring ****zine, they outline the unusual separation between their pro and amateur success.

Currently there are 13 mexican champions, not counting interim champs and those of mexican origin fighting out of the US. Yet withen the 108-year history of Olympic Boxing, they have won only 12 medals. For a comparison, Michael Phelps has 16 medals through 2 olympics, 4 more then mexico has through 23. THey also have the 23rd most boxing medals behind such countries as Italy(44), France(19) and Bulgaria(17)

Another thing to note is that Mexican Olympic medalists have not become great pros

Anybody find it weird how mexico has more current champs then olympic medals and pros do much better in the pros then amateurs?

Because they'd rather go pro, as mentioned. That's why they have so many pro bouts, many of them. They get their experience in the pros, which is one of the reason they go on to become good prize fighters since most of the experience is prize fighting, not point based amateur fighting.

What level is that? Other then JCC jr because of his name, no other boxer who starts out produces a profit

And even him i highly doubt it

Because they all go pro very early. Being an amateur gives them no money, but turning pro gives them enough to survive, and if they get better they can start earning more money.

Most mexican boxers are very poor and turn to boxing to make a living, so nobody wants to be an amateur since that won't give them money to even buy food.
