Emile Griffith was.

Griffith was gay, but not openly so at least during his boxing career. He killed a boxer in the ring who joked that Griffith was gay before the fight. Griffith was never quite the same fighter afterwards.

Not sure if he ever openly admitted he was gay, but he came awfully close at a minimum when he was older. He also got beaten up coming out of a gay bar when he was pretty old.
