Comments Thread For: Mayweather: I'd Love To Pass Torch To Broner, Gamboa

NEW YORK — Floyd Mayweather Jr. has been impressed thus far by what he has seen from Adrien Broner, the flamboyant fighter who is being groomed by his handlers as the sport’s next Mayweather.

The Ponce De Leon fight was the first time I had ever seen Broner, and I remember thinking this guy is all hype. Now 3 fights later my opinion couldn't be more different. I think he's going to have to leave 130 soon as there's no competition there, but he's young enough and tall enough he can probably easily end up at 140 or 147 before his career is over.

I like Gamboa but I see Broner taking the throne in terms of being hated like Floyd and eventually having some skills. He's on the right path, he just needs to stay disciplined... and stay in the gym.

What bothers me about statements like that is that neither Broner or Gamboa have done great things to make them heir apparent.

They're really both up and comers.

Floyd once said that Devon Alexander was his heir apparent after the Urango knockout.

          Remember that?

Floyd needs to let an heir apparent "emerge" and stop trying to find him.

I like what Broner brings to the table. With a couple more fights ( & years) under his belt, he'll settle in more into a style of his own and make some serious noise.
I like him for the sport, man. I do agree the Mayweather posturing outside of the ring is a bit corny sometimes. But He's young, talented, marketable, and has the ability to bring alot of new fans into the sport. Say what u say, lil ***** can scrap.

As far as Gamboa, he's not gonna be around as long as Broner, but lets not forget, his 30 is alittle different than most Boxing 30s. He's had an extensive amateur career, and alot of those fighters are relatively well-preserved. I see him still being a problem well into his mid-to-late 30s.

He's a good bet for the obvious reasons, (exciting to watch, fast, explosive, isn't afraid to engage), but most importantly, and what I like about him the most

Is that he hasn't dodged, ducked or avoided anybody. and has a go-get'em mentality that has been missing in the sport (from elite fighters, atleast) for quite some time.

I don't pay attention to the "throne" bulls**t, but i love both of these guys.

I think this is just Floyd saying stuff. Remember it was rumored he was interested in signing Gamboa to his promotional company and I'd imagine he'd also want Broner there.
