Comments Thread For: Donaire Swings For Fences, Forced To Settle For Shutout

By Jake Donovan - When one fighter takes all of the risks and the other fighter comes with a defensive-minded game plan, the result is almost always going to be a slow moving affair that winds up becoming more intriguing than appealing.

So went the New York City debut of bantamweight champion and pound-for-pound entrant Nonito Donaire, who provided all of the offense in a whitewash of Omar Narvaez in their 12-round title fight Saturday evening at The Theatre in Madison Square Garden.

Scores were 120-108 across the board in their HBO-televised main event.

The expectations were for Donaire – Philippines-born but raised in San Leandro, California – to endure a stiff challenge from a long-unbeaten titlist before eventually picking him apart in his usual crowd-pleasing manner. It wasn’t unlike the scouting report heading into his highly anticipated bantamweight title fight with then-champion Fernando Montiel earlier this year.

Donaire used that particular fight as his coming out party, scoring a sensational second round knockout that left Montiel twitching and stunned and the boxing world abuzz. He quickly raced up towards the top of most pound-for-pound lists as he added the bantamweight championship to a trophy case that included title stints at flyweight and super flyweight. the announcers were calling shots that didn't even land. Donaire fought Navarez's fight and got tagged alot while doing so, almost all of his shots were blocked, and got tagged. It's one thing to win a lopsided decision like Pacquiao vs Clottey, but that win was different, Pacquiao fought Clottey's fight but he DID OUT-LANDED him, Donaire did not connect more punches and fought Navarez's fight.

Look at my sig. I was there. **** was boring. Donaire fought all the game and got hit due to it. I don't care what you saw in the damn t.v. what I saw live was Omar hardly throwing any punches and Donaire doing all the work.

I hope Omar never comes back here in the U.S. Even the Argentinians were cursing Omar out at the 7th Round yelling Puto, Puta, and Maricon. So that the guy put up a fight at least.

I think the compubox stats are right. . . Donaire only landed like 30 more punches according to it, and that seems about right. . . Hell, he threw 3-4 times as many punches. . . He only landed at 16% connect rate. . . But Narv. only landed at 24% connect rate himself. . . Donaire only landed maybe 5-8 CLEAN PUNCHES. . BUT, he did land about 80 punches that kinda slipped through the guard, or ricocheted off his guard making SLIGHT CONTACT. . .

I don't think Donaire has NEAR THE STAMINA Pac has - as Pac was able to launch over 1200 punches, TWICE what Donaire threw. . . . But Narv has NOT ONLY a tight, high-guard, BUT ALSO nice foot-work, head and upper body movement, whereas Clottey ONLY has a tight, high-guard.

it would be a NOOB MISTAKE to base Donaire's potential performance against guys like Gamboa OFF THIS. . . Donaire is a "read and react" fighter, and if you don't give him **** to read, well, he ain't gonna look as good. . .

I think the guy who has the best chance to beat him, including gamboa, from 122-126 is RIGONDEAUX; Rigo is like a SUPER OMAR NARVAEZ with a LOT more punch. . .

ALso, I think if he makes it to 130, Broner beats him. . . I still take him over Gamboa - he'll time and catch gamboa with his left hook.

Sorry brah, but that's your fault. What did you expect, Navarez was the smaller guy coming up in weight against a Nonito who had the size and reach advantage, speed advantage, and so was expected to be more powerful than Navarez. You wanted a toe to toe battle? wanted him to **** with Nonito?, please...

i agree it was boring. and Nonito has to move up.

Donaire's single shots won't have the same effect on a non-midget. Ask Torito.

              Gamboa brutalizes Donaire.

i agree this was a stinker but i learned a few things. Nonito needs more combination punching and head movement. Has some great skills already but adding these would improve a lot. Narvaez was just too small an opponent. Period. He shouldnt have been there. This sort of fight will only hamper Nonito's progress.
