a smart coward is some1 who blatantly doesnt take a fight against a fighter they KNOW they cant beat (calzaghe against lacy). some1 who quits on his stool when he knows he could risk his life/health/career if he goes out for one more round (chavez vs tszyu or tszyu vs hatton). some1 who boxes cautiously to avoid getting hurt but gets called a ***** for it (byrd vs tua). some1 who retires at the right time although hes faced with a serious challenge (lewis vs klitchko). some1 who avoids a rematch with a fighter they had a too-close-for-comfort fight with (ruiz vs toney).

a brave idiot is some1 who takes a fight he knows deep down he cant win but fights anyway (gatti vs mayweather). some1 who keeps fighting even though hes risking his health/life/career if he continues (tyson vs lewis). some1 who slugs with a slugger when the slugger has a major advantage (conn vs louis 1, joe frazier vs foreman 1, others). some1 who keeps fighting past their prime cuz theres always another "great fight" on the horizon (evander holyfield). some1 who goes for the rematch even though its a really bad idea (tyson vs holyfield, frazier vs foreman 2, others).

we all know its better to be a smart coward.

personally, i would never quit because its that competative instinct in me. i think to myself "i dont care what this guy thinks of me or what he does to me, i wont give him the satifaction of making me quit! i wont give up on myself and i wont lie down for anybody cuz thats just not me."

Somehow I doubt that. You're one of those idiots that think that Gatti was really actually willing to die in the ring against Floyd. You wouldn't know until your presented with the situation. What would you do if you got pummeled by Zoo for 11 rounds? That's what I thought.

In my opinion both of these circumstances (Brave Idiot, Smart Coward) can not be judged by any of us legitamitely!!!!! We can comment all we want, but we have no idea how these fighters felt, or the circumstances that led to the decisions.

As an example, till this day Vitali has been ridiculed by fans for quitting against Byrd. He did have major surgery following the fight so was he a coward for making the intelligent decision to take care of his obviously painful injury and come back to fight again? We now know that Vitali has all the heart in the world, so obviously his decision at that time was not for a lack of bravery, especially against a light hitting Chris Byrd!!! We can say the same about many of the examples listed above. As far as the brave idiot is concerned, I think these fighters took the payday which was obviously very lucrative and somewhere deepdown knew they would be in for a tough evening, but also had confidence in their abilities that they can win!

I wouldn't give either case a negative label and I would expect that anyone would handle each situation as they see fit.
