Manny Pacquiao=Poor HBO Ratings? Wtf?

Davis said that while Pacquiao may be a big draw in the Philippines, he was a disappointment in terms of HBO TV ratings and his last fight against Marquez “rated only 4.5 percent,” which Davis disclosed was below the HBO standard of “no less than 6 percent.”

He said fighters who “fail to get the required ratings on HBO are scheduled on Boxing After Dark” which is regarded as a lower level boxing program where the total purse for both fighters is only some $500,000 to $600,000.

That really sucks. The most entertaining Featherweight and one of most entertaining boxers ever, period, and he's getting called a disappointment? That is really bad to hear. I thought HBO was all giddy for Manny(well as long as he beat Marquez), looks like they aren't.

He's quoting numbers. He's not saying Manny's not exciting. Don't blame HBO, blame sports fans who only tune into the smaller guys if they come into the ring on magic carpets, or doing flips.

yes manny is one of the most exciting featherweights today..but I think HBO must be blamed also if the rating was not that good because they have all the machineries to promote a fight, not only to the home countries of those 2 people fighting but also to every part of the world. can they do that?? HBO is a media company, why not do like CNN doing in promnoting fights?? evry person who has an access to a television, can eventually know that there is a pay per view fight of one of the most exciting featherweights in the world..

marquez isnt really a popular fighter compared to barrera or morales. i think the barrera rematch or a fight with morales would draw huge ratings. i love watching manny fight, imma be at pacman/marquez 2 if its in the states

That rots, but if you think about it, Tyson is still a draw. Manny's name isn't thrown around enough, we all know he is a great fighter. He destroyed one of HBO's top fighters. Like Tarver trying to fill Jones shoes, it will take many fights before Manny ruffles the right feathers and people will start tuning in to watch him.

When it comes to HBO and promoting fights, they could do a lot more than they do.... The first thing they need to do is get The Latino card on an english channel. They show All the fights they have on HBO on HBO latino, how about vice-versa, then Cotto would be a bigger name than he is now.

I'm not really blaming HBO. I just don't like how they talk like Manny isn't good for boxing. I know it's buisness to them and the fans are what really decide based on number of views though they need to see more to it than just numbers sometimes. We are the ones that pay to see this stuff, we should decide who we want to see. I also do agree that the low rating might be more so on Marquez's part than Manny's though cmon. Just hearing Manny is in a fight should make you want to see it regardless of his opponent. Though I guess if you consider this, this was Manny's first fight that he was the big name and was holding his own weight. Every fight before it in the US, including Barrera, he was the second person people came to see, and usually were hoping was knocked out. People tuned in to see BARRERA fight him, and not the other way around. Now that it was suppose to be people tuning in to seeing Manny fight Marquez, if it didn't hold up well, I don't know how much HBO will support his future bouts

You can't really blame HBO. It's very hard to promote a fight to an American audience where both fighters are not fully fluent in English or do not have some sort of flash or charisma. Marquez has a second rate Mexican following at best, his fans are the leftovers from Barrera, Morales, Castillo and others. As much as people want to believe that Pacquiao is popular in the United States, he is far from it, not on a national level. Prince Hamed was a huge ratings guy because of the flash, charisma, attitude and one punch KO ability.

There was a lot of talk over the Pacquiao-Marquez bout and the rematch should do much better in the TV ratings.
