Your mental approach is completely different during sparring, and it depends on what stage your preparation is at. Your conditioning/timing may be off and the other guy could be ready to go, headgear/larger gloves/etc all usually make for a completely different, lower-key, approach, to the workout.
Sparring partners often bring more intensity than the fighter himself, and during sparring you will often be trying to work on one aspect in particular, which will sometimes change your approach and possibly leave you open or vulnerable. That is often by design, so cannot be overlooked.
It's just completely different and cannot be compared to a real bout.
Who cares whether that rumor is true, it probably did happen, but changes nothing, because it is completely irrelevant.
