Manny Pacquiao: A Great Style, But Not A Great Fighter

MANNY PACQUIAO: A GREAT STYLE, BUT NOT A GREAT FIGHTER

    By Jeff Mayweather

When I look at Manny Pacquiao I see a fighter who comes to fight and gives 100% each time out. He gives the fans what they want to see and the guy can punch. His style is great, but overall I have never considered him a great fighter. He gets the job done with what he has, which is pressure and power, but I have never been caught up with him like other people have.

In a lot of ways he reminds me of Welterweight Champion Zab Judah, in that they are both wild and reckless. Pacquiao simply isn't technically sound as some would like to believe. I have always thought his speed was overrated and his defense has been a problem for him as well. He can give it and take it, but when he stepped to the plate against Erik Morales last March we saw many of his flaws exposed. In Morales he met a fighter with a good chin and enough skills to throw him off of his game and come away with the win.

I wasn't terribly surprised by the outcome of the first Morales-Pacquiao fight, but I was surprised by how much Morales had left in his tank. Erik showed that the wars with Barrera hadn't taken their toll completely on of him and for that reason I feel he will defeat Pacquiao if they ever meet again. I just don't think Pacquiao can make the type of adjustments that he needs against a world class fighter like Erik. He is very dangerous in the ring but the bottom line is that his style is repetitive and I see him coming up short against the best of the best.

With all that said I still do feel Pacquiao can have a nice career. I can only see his career being shortened if he continues to take unnecessary punishment like he did against Morales. Pacquiao brings the drama to the fight each time out and he punches with bad intentions. That alone will keep the fans tuning in for more.

First of all this writer doesn't know what he's talking about. He compares Pac to Zab. Zab is a better boxer then Morales & Barrera combined. Zab out boxed a great boxer in Spinks in the rematch. I don't see Morales or Barrera beating a slick boxer like Spinks.

I don't see Pac losing to Raheem, Pac is to fast & he will catch Raheem. Pac is not a great boxer, but he's not as bad as this guy makes him out to be. He's a brawler with good speed & that's all he needs to do. I don't see Morales beating Pac in the rematch. It's not like Morales is such a great boxer, if he was he would've never lost to a guy like Raheem.

you right man. And like we all know, it was a 115-113 close fight fo Morales. THere wasn't a huge difference of degree on how Morales dominated ta fight. NOT EVEN! Pac was there keepin up, throwin his punches and landing. It was a close fight. No degree of clear ass whoopin by Morales. Only MOrales nuthuggres that were embarrased last Saturday believe that.

Yes I agree! Also lets not forget how much blood Pac lost in the first fight against Morales because of the cut. Any doctor can tell you when you lose that much of blood like Pac did, you will not have the same energy, this will take away your power. Also he didn't have his puncher gloves, people should not listen to that idiot Manny Steward from HBO, because I disagree with him. I know a glove can make a big difference in a punch. Still it was a close fight, It wasn't like Morales dominated Pac. If the fight gone one more round, it wouldn't surprise me if Morales would've got knocked out. He almost did at the end of the fight.

hahahah your wrong Zab beat cory sphinks not with skill but kinda how pacman beat barrera aggression and throwing many punches! and by the way zab won by knockout.

Face it they have the same style both southpaw, both fast, both powerful and both of them got that powerful lead left.

I am at least honest that they both have the natural gifts but they dont have the technical skill that will help them when they get older, look at roy jones jr! once his speed and reflexes left he aint **** he lost to 2 guys who are not that great in my opinion because roy jones doenst have the standard boxing skills he leaves his hands down.

Your wrong. Zab can box & punch. Zab has good skills, he doesn't have a great chin, that is his only weakness. If Zab wants to box, he can box with best of them. Pac also can hit with his right, he proved it in his last fight, so he just doesn't have a punch with his left hand. He can punch with both hands. Like I said before, Zab can box better then Morales & Barrera combined, that is if he wants to box. He's too much in love with his power.

ya that's true. Zab can box. Pac's, MAB's and Erik's boxing skills is shyt compared to Zab's. I mean, why else would sum give Zab a high chance of winning gainst Weatha? It's because he can box too and is arguably hits harder than Floyd (P4P, even weight class LOL). If you've got fast feet like Zab's then it's highly likely that yer boxing skills is above average.

They may be correct.Pac doesnt have much skills. But he has an excess in speed and power.Boy, what fighter wouldnt exchange their skill for PAC's innate talent! You gotta love the way this man fights.Gatti never had great technical skills.Heck how many lossses did he have? But he was HBO's poster boy, fan-favorite and media darling and a certified hit everytime he fights.Same thing with Pac.He doesnt have Gatti popularity yet but he will be soon.Hes only 26!...Now if you are a boxer, tell me, would you people want to have JMM's ooh soo superior skills with an empty arena or Pac's kamikaze go-for-broke style with fans screaming when you are in action?

Pac's an ok fighter, but most fighters dont get blessed with being naturally fast, and naturally having power like Pac does.

I think you guys shouldn't even talk about his "one-dimensional" skills...if it works, why not?

He's IMO one of the most exciting fighters in the sport. He's a great ambassador for the sport, and for the Phillipines.
