Just because you make a correct pick doesn't mean you knew what you were talking about, you just guessed and got it right.
Exactly. I stand by my statement that this fight had Lacy as the favorite going in for a reason. Nobody knew how good either really were. If you picked Lacy, you were just guessing. If you picked Calzaghe, you were just guessing. Neither was proven at that point. The only difference was Lacy was knocking everyone out and Calzaghe was repeatedly getting injured and backing out of big fights. People, including myself, were fed up with Calzaghe.

He turned out a great performance, but I'm not embarrassed at all for picking Lacy to win. I saw no reason to pick Calzaghe then.

basically what this guy said. probably the most realistic post in the thread pre-fight.

Iceman John Scully told me back in 2003 that Lacy was good not great, so I believed him.

He always had good words for Calzaghe, etc so I thought this fight was an easy pick.

I think most of the posters here turned on the TV, saw a muscular guy knocking people out with ease, and assumed he'd do the same to a guy they hadn't seen much of.

The same thing happened with Miranda a year or two later.

People just get over-excited when they see someone look sensational against a journeyman. After Williams-Kolle and Pavlik-Lockett NSB went crazy as well.

Most people on here seem to dislike (or at least be indifferent to) Andre Berto. There's a lot of (somewhat justified) criticism of his standard of opposition. However I'd be willing to bet that if Berto had knocked out his last 3-4 opponents rather than outboxing them, loads of people in here would be crazy about him and pick him to destroy Shane, they wouldn't care that he hasn't fought great opposition yet.

So I should be praised for picking Ward to beat Kessler I guess?

Truth is, I didn't know who would win that fight. Kessler was the favorite. I picked Ward on a hunch just like those who picked Joe to beat Lacy.

So I guess I'm a genius now? Doesn't work that way.

People always have and always will underestimate Joe Calzaghe.

Not the same at all. Mosley-Berto is a fight that features one guy who is a proven great and another guy who hasn't fought very good competition at all. This is one of those instances where you should get praised if you pick Berto and turn out to be right because we know Mosley is great. We've seen enough of Berto to know he has a chance with his speed but that Mosley is going to be favored because we know more about him and have seen him topple what we assume are better fighters than Berto.

Going into Lacy-Calzaghe, we had one fairly meaningful fight between the two's entire careers. That was Calzaghe beating Eubank. Not enough to assess either guy with any confidence at all, hence the odds favoring the knockout artist.

If you're going to rib somebody, rib a Cotto fan for thinking he could beat Pacquiao. That, to me, is a ****** pick. Or rib a Marquez fan who picked him to beat Mayweather. Beyond idiotic.

But it's cool. We have a few very die-hard Calzaghe/all white fighters fans with 5 alts each and a lot of time to log on, so it's nothing to pay attention to. I've said my peace on it, and I'm still going to side with a hungry knockout artist over a protected European champion 9 times out of 10 in future toss-up fights.

I think you've misunderstood me. I wasn't drawing a comparison between Calzaghe-Lacy and Mosley-Berto, just giving an example of how a guy who KO's journeymen will get overrated.

Having said that, you acted like a **** about the whole thing and you were very, very wrong. It's laughable how badly you overrated Lacy, and it wasn't 'just a hunch', it was you constantly building him up for months. Trying to re-write it and make it a racial issue or claim that everyone else was just as ignorant as you is pure revisionism.
