You can almost guarantee a close, debatable decision whichever way it goes. Calzaghe would 'land' more and be more aggressive, but Toney would land the cleaner shots. It wouldn't be a lot different to the Calzaghe-Hopkins fight, although Toney would engage more.
Toney vs RJJ is all I need to know how this mythical matchup would play out. I wasn't really impressed with how RJJ won that fight. It was basically hit n' run throughout the entire 12 rounds, and that's exactly what Calzaghe does and he's a southpaw to boot.
I was a big Toney fan, but, I'd have to give a slight edge to Calzaghe. Toney does well, if you like to stay in the pocket or go at him. Calzaghe will be pitter-patting and running all at the same time, all night long.

I didn't see anything debateable in the Hopkins fight. I thought that Calzaghe won easily, although because of Hopkins' habits, a bit messily. I thinnk he would be too fast for Toney, and, if at his peak, which was about 7-8 years before the Hopkins fight, he would batter Toney. Calzaghe was a heavy puncher who developed serious hand problems, and had to change his style.
Joe Calzaghe never saw anything like a prime James Toney.
Would be a close fights on the cards though considering Joe's output but Toney would most definitely ladn the cleaner shots and outbox him pretty much.

Well, I had Calzaghe winning the fight as well, but it was far from easy for him. I couldn't give the decision to Hopkins because he wasn't active enough and spoiled a lot, but I was more impressed with his work when he did engage than Calzaghe's windmill assault. Toney would certainly be more active and aggressive in his approach as well and I'd expect it to be a closely contested fight.
