He always had credit for beating Kessler and Hopkins in my eyes.
He retired because there wasn't anyone out there that could beat him, the closest was Chad Dawson matchup..but Dawson would have got schooled, too inexperienced.Comment

Well it wasn't a schooling...but I thought calzaghe won. It could have gone either way, what hopkins has done since has shut a lot of american fans up though, I remember a lot of fans in particular americans being so critical of calzaghe's performance against a 40 year old hopkins, but the joke is on them now because what hopkins has done since and even in the fights leading up that fight showed what a top fighter calzaghe was and how tough he is to beat. Instead of looking at a fighters age and making false assumptions people should try and actually observe the fighter they are watching, hopkins looked great in that fight with calzaghe, fast, accurate...same old b-hop. Whilst calzaghe couldn't get much going offensively he nulified hopkins and made him tired from the pressure, I haven't seen hopkins gassed out like that before.
Calzaghe never gets the respect he deserves from the other side of the pond because the resume is not what it should have been, but that doesn't make it bad...his resume was solid/goodComment

People seem to be forgetting Hopkins was very dirty during that fight, the amount of headbutts was a joke, the faking of the low blows to buy time was hilarious, basically Hopkins tried to steal a win by fighting ugly.Comment

He didn't "school" Hopkins. He won by 2 or 3 rounds imo. Close fight but still a clear win for Calzaghe imo.
And yes, Calzaghe gets more credit. Hopkins is arguably the best LHW around and Kessler is arguably 2nd/3rd best SMW around too.
I wish Calzaghe fought Chad Dawson before retiring, and beat him. That way he'd get even more credit.Comment

I was very disappointed in Hopkins in the Calzaghe fight ...he started off well by knocking Joe down all to run out of ideas...From about the 4 rd on he decides to hold,hug,and cheat his way to a victory ...to see Hopkins the ex con crawl around on all fours and beg the ref to take a point away for a fake low blow was cringe worthy to watch to say the least !
Calzaghe love him or hate him had to much gas/work rate for him,that's why Hopkins decided to try and spoil/cheat..he new Joe was all over him !
My old man is a huge Hopkins fan but even he couldn't defend him for his antics in that fight and leading up to it
