People on this board who talk about how catchweights don't affect fighters have no understanding of sports whatsoever. Cutting or maintaining weight is an exact science and fighters who are use to certain weight classes have a specific and delicate process when it comes to making weight. You mess with that process by adding a weight cap and it affects the fighter's performance.

Margarito was a career welterweight, so what I just said doesn't apply to him. There were other reasons to criticize that bout; the weight draining of Margarito is not one of them.

By the way, Cotto objected to putting his welterweight title on the line against Manny, but was essentially strongarmed by Arum and company.
De la hoya looked like a holocaust victim that night and had only re-hydrated 3 pounds by fight time.

Regarding Cotto, if those 2 lbs didn't matter didn't matter, why would Roach even implement the catch-weight in the first place.

Look at the weight in for Pac-Cotto, Cotto's eye's are sunken in because he was weight drained.

What's bull**** is that Cotto's belt was at stake for a catch-weight fight.

what kind of **** was that?

As for Clottey, they could have chosen literally ANYONE over that unknown quantity and it would have made more sense, more money, and more of a fight.

At some point, you have to realize that either Manny is Arum's pawn OR that he can choose his opponents.Which one is it?
arum runs the show at Top Rank. Arum tells pac how much every possible opponent will potentially make. of the choices that arum presents to pac, pac chooses whoever will get him the most money.

the clottey fight was better for arum cause he didn't have to split the promotion with anyone else and pac got more than the lion's share of the money because clottey was just happy to be in a big fight.

last year, jmm wanted 50/50 for a pac fight. mosley most likely was asking for 50-30% of the the purse since he was coming off a great win against margarito.

So basically what Arum told pac was, you can fight clottey for a ****load of money, or you can split almost half the purse and fight jmm and/or mosley. pac of course choose the money.

Sigh.....I want to see Pac fight a solid fighter without any advantages, stipulations, etc.
IMO, Cotto is a changed fighter (not shot, but changed) and I don't expect him to show success against the elite at this stage of his career.I'll give him credit,he fought Yuri Foreman at his natural weight.....and he didn't even turn down the fight because he was "too tall"! lol

Let's be honest-do you even care about what makes financial sense for Manny? If you do,then I guess we will have all of those poor level of opponents fighting the elite level fighters because they get thrown the crumbs (along with stipulations).I want to see competitive fights, not business deals! If it means taking a ****ing pay-cut,then he should do it,because he "fights for his fans",eh?

so you complain about cotto/pac being at a catchweight, but now pac can't fight cotto at 154 lbs???

so are you saying that pac would've beaten cotto without the catchweight anyways, cause pac would just beat up cotto at 154 lbs right???

                  I honestly don't.

I prefer pac fight the winner of bradley/alexander, berto, then jmm, in that order.

cotto and clottey were top 5 WWs. I dunno what you're crying about.

right now only 1 guy can challenge pac and that's wifebeater jr. but he's no where to be found.

If JMM didn't ask for 50/50 split and OST, Pac would have fought him instead of Clottey in Dallas..

If JMM didnt ask for 1.2 M dollar out of the 1.5M purse that HBO is offering for both fighters, we would have had the rematch as early as late 2003 or early 2004 instead of 2008. And I would bet that JMM would have defeated Pac if the rematch was made in 2003. At a time when Pac's skills has not yet been developed.

Cotto and Hatton were also in the P4P list when Pac fought them..
