Let's be honest, Danny hadn't earnt a shot at the title so soon just from the Tyson win and should have - at the very least - been sent after the lesser titlists first.
I don't know what would happen if he met the tricksy Byrd or the hugging Ruiz, but - although you shouldn't compare form in this sport - he KOed Brewster opponent Kali Meehan in 32 seconds when they met a few years back.
If Danny was in with Meehan I'd give Danny a 90% chance of victory.
But what happened tonight? I didn't even recognise Danny Williams. In hindsight, yes, he did appear too heavy. Yet everything went wrong. I expect cries of "bum" now because all his skills - movement, speed, head movement, ring smarts - abandoned him. To be honest, I think his confidence abandoned him and he retreated into himself within the first round when the realisation of it all set in.
I wanted to know tonight that even if Danny lost, could he still compete in world class competition - albeit to a lesser degree than Vitali? I still don't know the answer to that, and I wished he'd done more.
But one thing that Danny did show was heart... so do you respect him more or less after tonight's one-sided bout?
