By Keith Idec - NORTH BERGEN, N.J. — While lauding Lucas Matthysse as the next great Argentinean fighter to come to the United States and upset a favored fighter from America, Golden Boy Promotions executive David Iskowitch ominously left out one name.
Iskowitch mentioned middleweight champion Sergio Martinez and junior welterweight title-holder Marcos Maidana, who emerged as attractions on HBO by overcoming odds and winning big fights.
Martinez deserved a victory over Kermit Cintron, barely lost a “Fight of the Year” candidate against Paul Williams and took Kelly Pavlik’s middleweight titles April 17 in Atlantic City. The heavy-handed Maidana made highly regarded prospect Victor Ortiz quit 16 months ago in Los Angeles.
Those comparisons make sense, obviously.
“They come in under the radar, and they shock the world,” Iskowitch said Wednesday during a press conference at Global Boxing Gym. “We’ve seen Sergio Martinez do it, we’ve seen Marcos Maidana do it and on Saturday night we’re going to see Lucas Matthysse do it.”
For some reason, though, Iskowitch didn’t single out Carlos Baldomir, a once-anonymous Argentinean who has already upset Zab Judah about 15 miles from where Matthysse will try to defeat Judah tonight at Prudential Center in Newark. Baldomir was older, had a worse record and was less powerful than Matthysse, yet the 16-1 underdog out-pointed Judah in their 12-round welterweight title fight on Jan. 7, 2006, in The Theater at Madison Square Garden.
