By Jake Donovan - There’s a stale and generic formula that far too many managers and promoters follow these days when they get their hands on a blue-chip prospect.
Keep the kid busy and eventually work your ways towards televised dates… but not against anyone who poses any risk of pulling off an upset. Big punchers and slick boxers need not apply for the role of opponent.
Upgrade the competition… but only in name value, and make sure that name is forced to move up at least one division above his usual fighting weight.
Play it safe until a title shot is around the corner… but hold out until the weakest possible titlist becomes available (or better yet, when a title becomes vacant), and then still demand the world and beyond in pursuing said title fight.
Mercito Gesta has the look of a future star. He’s undefeated, which always helps in today’s fickle market. He’s Filipino and a southpaw, which can both work to his advantage (piggybacking off of Manny Pacquiao’s fame) and to his detriment (absorbing the unfair burden of becoming the next Manny Pacquiao).
