Comments Thread For: Busted: Today’s Game Not Built For Tournament Success

By Jake Donovan - Stop me if you’ve heard this one before - a tournament is in the works where its winner can’t indisputably claim to be the best in his division.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice...

While the ambitious intentions of the Showtime brass is to be commended, someone should’ve had the sense to pump the brakes the moment it was realized that history was on the verge of repeating itself.

Barely moments removed from trying to reinvent the wheel with its Super Six super middleweight tournament that is now barely a super Final Four, Showtime still has brackets on its mind as it pursues plans for a four-man elimination series at bantamweight.

On the surface, it’s being called a bantamweight tourney, but as was echoed the moment the Super Six was announced – how true of a tournament is it when not all of the division’s best players are involved.

With the Super Six, it was just Lucian Bute missing from the fold – although a heck of an omission considering that a case could be made for his being the best super middleweight in the world when the tournament first began.

It’s even worse with the plans at bantamweight where not all four of its participants can claim to be the four best 118 lb. fighters on the planet. [Click Here To Read More]

What attracted me most in this article is that Jake goes up against another boxing news site. Being a journalist is a business as tough as being a fighter, isn't it?

Actually just one writer in particular... well, two if you count Oscar.

The thing that bugged me about that piece, though, was that if I were doing something similar, I wouldn't have stopped at Nigel Collins and said "Screw it, no comment." Almost any e-mail I send to The Ring, I always include Bill Detloff and Eric Raskin (both of whom I have a tremendous amount of respect for and read regularly).

But even if both were to say, "See what Nigel says," I'd have still asked Michael Rosenthal, Joe Santoliquito or Doug Fischer for their thoughts.

Yes, the top guy is usually who want you want first, but how many articles are written on Golden Boy where it's David Itschkowitz or Eric Gomez speaking on behalf of the company when Schaefer or DLH aren't available (or decline comment).

The super six is cool and all but for most all tournaments I think you really need single round elimination. Round robin takes forever, injuries can happen, etc.
