wat happened to marciano after he retired

im not sure if this is true, got it off a website

A Sports Illustrated story in 1993 didn't paint a pretty picture of Marciano's life after boxing. It said he was obsessed with collecting his payments for personal appearances in cash, evading paying income tax, having numerous ***ual encounters with women other than his wife, never picking up a check, consorting with Mafia figures, and loaning more than $100,000 to finance a Cleveland loan shark.

On August 31, 1969, the day before Marciano's 46th birthday, Barbara Marciano had planned a joint birthday party for her husband and herself (Barbara had turned 40 on August 30) in their Fort Lauderdale home. But Marciano, in Chicago, chose not to attend. Instead, he flew with the nephew of a mobster to make a personal appearance in Des Moines, Iowa. The small plane crashed in a cornfield in Newton, Iowa, killing both passengers and the inexperienced pilot.

if all this is true, iv lost respect for this man. i still have MAD MAD tons of respect for this man, but defenitily not as much.

All heroes diminish a bit when closely scrutinized. He was only human, like all of us.

Marciano always admired the mafia He never let them have any influence on his fights, but he respected that they were poor italians like himself that rose above their standing in society.

As for his cheating on his wife, well just about every other champion did it, so why is it a big deal with Marciano?

Rocky got fat, bald, and was ripped off by his handlers so he had little money left. He was a vain man who tried to keep his balding hair a secret and also shook down anyone and everyone who would ay him for appearances so he could maintain that he had money. He died on the way to one of those gigs.

Marciano had money. The guy didn't die poor. There was said to be at least $1 million unaccounted for at the time of his death that was never found. He was EXTREMELY disorganized and kept poor records of his money. He was cheap as hell, you have that right, but he had a generous side to him as well and many times he had other more needy fighters like Joe Walcott substitute at appearances in his place for very good money.

You take any man, especially a boxer who makes his living on violence, and look at him under a microscope and there is going to be ugly spots. Joe Louis did coke and nearly choked one of his wives to death. Dempsey might have beaten/pimped out his first wife for money and drank excessively. Good old smokin' Joe Frazier was caught beating his wife just recently. Gene Tunney, the refined bookworm, even had his struggles with alcoholism.

Obviously none of these guys ever ****d someone or assaulted a cop like Tyson or Liston, but I can think of very few fighters that I've never heard a bad word about out of the ring. George Chuvalo for one maybe. Also Max Schmeling. Joe Walcott and Ezzard Charles. Hm...Jess Willard. Michael Grant. Primo Carnera. Buddy Baer. Mostly the big lumbering guys seemed to be decent sorts out of the ring. A lot of the guys who possessed great deals of killer instinct, well, it seemed to seep into their life out of the ring.

In general no one is perfect and I'm sure there are plenty of things our own parents, hell even ourselves, would be ashamed to let others know. It's just the ugly truth.

It's hard to tell going by the movies because they change so much ****, but I read books on these old fighters. Rocky was definitely not poor when he died, but he did lose all his fighting money. He did alot of hustling.
