I still reckon he could beat the above fighters, but I doubt he would be the same fighter who left the sport a year ago. During his prime years, he never really faced any real opposition. The Lacy and Kessler fight came when Joe was on the slide and look what he did with them. He never had to step up a a gear a won both those fights pretty easily. Thus a prime Calzaghe gives any SMW hell, and that includes a prime Roy Jones, a prime James Toney, a prime Eubank, a prime Benn, and prime Gerrald Mcclellan, and a prime Hopkins.

Calzaghe is a case of what could have been. He is still a great fighter, but his resume holds him back from being compared with the best of our era.
imagine what the calzaghe who fought robin reid would do to them! oh.......

Oooh you managed to find one person with a wining record, well done for u.

Look if you don't Calzghe thats fair enough, but the man was a great boxer who unified smw dvision with record defences & went on to beat Hopkins at lightheavy.

his resume could of been a lot better but its still pretty damm good..

I still don't get why Calzaghe didn't just fight Beyer and Ottke in Germany. Especially Ottke even the German's wouldn't have been able to rob him.

If he done this and held all the trinkets he'd probably have got to the big fights sooner. Calzaghe's fault, and Warren's fault. Also, wasn't the return fight with Veit Calzaghe's biggest payday in his career at that point?

Calzaghe was a homebody pure and simple.

I hope Warren shows more dare with Olympians than he did with Calzaghe and Hatton. DeGale and Gavin should be fighting for British titles within 9 months.

Very interesting article. I get the feeling Joe is having difficulty coming to terms with have given up boxing rather like ex soldiers who have been in the army a long time not coming to terms with society at the end of their career.
I also found the bit where he examined what it felt like to lose in his mind very interesting. Remaining unbeaten was very important to him maybe too important. I get the feeling although happy with his career he is still a little unfulfilled. Froch pointing out Joe's cherry picking ways has clearly upset him and I get the feeling inside he feels there is some truth in the accusations and this rankles him.
Since packing up boxing he has split with his long term girlfriend and is embroiled in legal action with a case against Frank Warren. Clearly Joe likes to have the last word. I doubt the acting will work out ,I can't see him taking to being directed and told what to do and working in a group situation.

zsolt erdei? sven ottke? these guys aren't great and they have basically the same resume as calzaghe besides the old guys. record defenses? ottke has the same number and did it first. he also unified the division first. you just think calzaghe is great cause you are from the same place as him. when you look from the outside with a clear view you will see the truth.

So, how many world title belts does Julio Cesar Chavez Jr hold? Has he ever held a title for over 10 years and been champion at 2 weight divisions and retired undefeated and a champion? God, I'm new here and what everyone else has said about you is right, you are a moron!

Calzaghe is from south wales mate, which is absolutly miles away from where im from.

Ottke reusme is far worst than Calzaghe's & Zsolt best win is against Giacobbe Fragomeni who had already had his anus handed to him on a plate by Haye..

you are both from the uk but now you are gonna pretend like you have no ties at all. brilliant.

i would say ottke's supermiddle resume as at least as good as calzaghe's maybe better.the old shot jones and the gift decision over hopkins don't add much for calzaghe. and calzaghe's best real win is over kessler who got his anus handed to him on a plate by ward. luckily calzaghe retired just in time. undefeated!

If Joe hadn't have spent so many pointless years being Frank Warren's lapdog then the bigger fights would have happened earlier in his career if he wanted it.

It's no coincidence that Naz and Hatton got the blockbuster fights after they spilt with Frank Warren.

I really like Calzaghe but he left question marks when he retired. He hung em up just as things where getting interesting.(Dawson, Bute, Froch and so on).
