Oscar De La Hoya hasn’t been too vocal as of late, not since Bob Arum and Thomas Hauser called him out on a potential usage of PED’s in his past. But, holding true to form with his most recent statements, Oscar still maintains that Antonio Margarito should be banned from boxing. However, it’s Oscar’s comparison between Margarito and Mosley that has drawn my ire. Let’s examine this further.
“Yes, many have said Mosley made a mistake by doping, and Margarito did not because he didn't fight with bandages with the plaster but the situation is different. Mosley may have had more energy but he didn't play with someone's life”
“I know boxing is Margarito's job, but what he wanted to do was dangerous, to play with the someone's life in the ring” Oscar De La Hoya, The Record
First, I am going to go on record and agree with Oscar that Margarito was “playing with someone’s life” when he had the plastered hand wraps. However, that’s all I agree with because Oscar’s downplaying of Mosley’s usage of Steroids is a joke.
“Mosley may have had more energy”
Dennis Ross Sacramento, CA “Doesn’t Oscar realize that steroids give boxers more than just energy?”
Taking steroids will make a boxer stronger which can translate into hitting someone harder than normal. In fact, Keith Kizer, Executive Director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission echoes my thoughts when he commented on steroids in boxing during our recent interview:
“Unlike other sports, you are hitting another human being in the head harder than you should be. The fear of killing someone by hitting them harder should also be a deterrent, God forbid nothing like this happens.”
So, when De La Hoya says that Mosley only had “more energy”, he was being ridiculous. Steroids give boxers way more than just energy. They can give them the ability to generate abnormal levels force and power.
“the situation is different”
John Snyder Sacramento, CA “Doesn’t Oscar realize that cheating is still cheating, regardless of how you cheat?”
Their methods might have been different, but they both could have seriously hurt someone as a result of their cheating. They both were playing with other boxer’s lives. This is just Oscar trying to put his “spin” on the scenario.
