A major reason that steroid-induced gains appear to evaporate when the drugs are stopped is that many athletes either lay off all training after a contest or severely cut back on intensity. Inactivity amplifies cortisol’s effect and can cause muscle loss. On the other hand, if athletes continus to train with high intensity, there’s no reason their muscle gains would disappear.
