The boxer Juan Manuel "Juanma" Lopez injured his right ankle Wednesday night as he descended the stairs of his house, which has forced him to modify his training a few days ahead of his fight against Steve Luevano.
Víctor Martínez, trainer of the WBO 122 pounds champion, explained that a sprain caused a "minor inflammation," so it had to stop the running on the track.
"The work in the gym has continued. What we stop is the running to prevent it a twist into something more serious, "Martinez said.
Juanma trains at this time for his Jan. 23 fight at Madison Square Garden, New York, with Luevano, the WBO champion at 126 pounds.
That bout will mark his rie to the FeatherWeight Division, after making five successful defenses of the 122-pound title he won in June 2008 with a knockout in the first round against Daniel Ponce de Leon.
Lopez then defended against Caesar Figueroa, Sergio Medina, Gerry Penalosa, Olivier Lontchi and Rogers Mtagwa.
Martinez added that Lopez trained on Thursday and Friday "with the necessary precautions to protect his ankle" and a doctor certified that he suffered no ligament tear, just a sprain, so the Luevano fight is not at risk of being canceled .
The trainer said that tomorrow, Monday Lopez (27-0 with 24 knockouts) must re-run, but in a soft track.
Martinez hopes that by next Saturday is back to business as usual.
"He's fine. Today (yesterday) he is in Vieques delivering toys that where collected in the match (promotional) against Raymond Arrieta. Now the whole job is done because it started from November 2, most came with the condition of the earlier fighting. That title is going to be ours, "Martinez said.
