Possible HBO super 4 tournament at 140?
Devon Alexander has been quoted as saying that HBO are putting together a tournament similar to the Showtime Super Six. Four fighters will participate and the names tentatively written down are Alexander, Amir Khan, Vicious Victor Ortiz and his conqueror Marcos Maidana.
Alexander said on Youtube, “HBO are trying to put together a tournament similar to the Super Six. We are just trying to get it signed”
If this event were to take place it would fantastic for boxing. It would capitalise on the momentum generated by the Super Six, Pacquiao and Mayweather’s impending superfight and David Haye’s foray into the heavyweight division.
The four fighters make for an entertaining show. Two current world champions (Alexander and Khan), and Maidana and Ortiz fought an epic war only months ago. All have explosive styles and are young and hungry to prove their worth. Khan is looking to make a splash in America and what better opportunity to make it. Ortiz would have the chance to avenge his loss to Maidana, and the newly crowned Devon Alexander is fresh on the scene.
These types of tournaments are the way forward for boxing. A place in which there are no mismatches or foregone conclusions. But the best in each division fighting each other in entertaining, pick em fights. This really can elevate boxing and cut out all the politics and avoidance.
The governing bodies have to support these tournaments as they have in the Super Six. This gives the show some credibility and people start to believe that the winner of the tournament really is the best in the division. I will applaud the television companies if this concept starts to become commonplace. It will, to some extent, bring the glory days back.
