The statements about him having never failed a test previously, etc. are all very Lance Armstrong. They'd be better off saying nothing, not least because one can easily turn it around and say he's failed one when he needed a win the most.

Having never failed a test before is useless information and proves nothing in regards to whether the athlete has been taking PEDs or not.

But you're right he's better off saying nothing, because there's nothing you can say. Even if you're genuinely innocent, still nothing you can say or do to prove otherwise.
