Comments Thread For: The Beltline: AI-powered judge takes boxing a step closer to the brave new world it appears to seek

Until news broke regarding plans to have an artificial intelligence-powered judge at "ringside" for the heavyweight rematch between Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury, Elliot Worsell wasnt sure which word to use to summarise boxing in 2024...

Instead of being repulsed by the idea, it just takes a second to remember how rotten, incompetent, corrupt or all of the above boxing judges are to start welcoming the prospect of AI judging with open arms.

It can never replace humans, nor should it.

Having said that, if an AI judge proves pretty accurate, I wouldn't be against that. Of course, don't want it to cost the jobs of those judges that are competent.

Ai is only as good as the program running it. What happens when promotors start updating the programing to favor their fighters? I'd much rather just have bad judging called out and have judges explain their decisions. If they do a bad job they go back to doing smaller fights and have to work their way up again.

If compubox is trash before it was exposed as people counting at home in their laptops. I can't see how this is better

Never is a very long time, it may never replace a genius whos mind creates the unknown from imagination , but its definitely going to be able to score boxing with precision unheard of, give it the data of all the variables from sensors and it will never make the mistakes that human judges make.

this is just a cheap ploy. the same type of cowardly tactic used by corporations.

score cheating will only get worse.

Honestly, I never score fights unless I genuinely don't have a preference of a winner. I will never buy that judges won't have preference of style especially in huge fights where the fighters are globally known. All the biggest fights we have ever seen between elite fighters are affected by this unconscious bias.

You actually do need to somehow create a scenario where tech can remove that bias.

The funny thing is if there truly was a totally impartial AI judge the scores it would turn in would likely be wider than a human judge. We say the rounds are scored round by round but human beings will never work that way. Our brains make predictions and create narratives. I feel like most of us even up score cards.

AI would be miles more accurate than dumb ass corrupt judges. AI generally is amazing! The boxing overlords would never allow it to take over for obvious reasons. You can't bribe AI.
