Comments Thread For: An investor and a Gentleman: Gerry Cooney held on to his money, but not his regrets

Cooney battled his share of demons, no doubt. Hes had his struggles and his low points. But once he made his money, he was never in danger of running out of it.

Good for him. Nice to see that some of these guys do leave the sport with both their sense and cents.

I love seeing happy endings in boxing.

Let's see if any of these current boxers reach out to him for advice.

      That's what I'd do.

He was definitely managed poorly as a fighter, but he got the most buck for the ****.

He was managed for maximum cash for the Holmes fight that's why the sat him down rather than fighting while waiting for huge money fight. Also 8.5 million was probably about 27 to 30 million in todays money as I remember when what a dollar bought back then and it was kings ransom compared to now.

Also part of the reason why he held his money is because he isn't punchy. If you look at football players and hockey players the players that exhibit bad CTE are all broke.

A feel-good boxing story. I'm happy for Gerry. He's a great guy, outgoing, smart. Canastota should consider him to be the featured speaker in 2025 at their boring Saturday night banquet. That fete needs someone to liven it up.

BoxingScene's Garry Jonas is doing his best to ignore Usyk v Fury fight week, and we're in the middle of it.

Btw, what happened to your weekly Turki/Saudi hit pieces?

you always hear about the broke fighters but rarely about the ones that made it. I dont know about many fighters. I seen some news on Winky Wright that he was investing in businesses and he seemed to live within his means.

For other random celebs, I heard that Vanilla Ice and Chamillionaire both made a fortune investing in real estate.
