Comments Thread For: Prichard Colon, Gerald McClellan, and boxing's duty of care

There are, for those who choose to look for them, a number of examples of boxing looking out for its own in times of need, yet still one wonders if the sport should do more, writes Kieran Mulvaney

I’ve always liked how Mark Breland made sure to get himself an annuity. That way there is always money coming in for him every month.

If the boxing industry isn’t doing enough then the boxers should do things like that for themselves at least. Get financial advisors to show them how to invest and set up something for when they are retired, or if God forbid they end up needing care.

Annuities are a really good idea. I'm surprised by guys like Vasquez that don't have health insurance. It's pathetic but in the U.S. It's s must , one good illness and hospital stay can bankrupt people.

Gerald was an excellent fighter, a big puncher and a big heart.

Praying he gets completely well, after such a long health battle. His sisters are also heroic. God bless them all.

Unfortunatelly many of them get scammed by "financial advisors" because they don't have the basic money management skills.

              .
how tf did he do that?

Shelly Finkel, Breland's manager, said his contract with the Olympic 147-pound champion provided an annuity ''for life'' for the boxer, starting at age 31. At that time, said Finkel, Breland will receive ''six figures'' every year for as long as he lives.

''It has nothing to do with his purses,'' said Finkel. ''In fact, if he announced his retirement tomorrow, he'd still get it.''

i wonder what the response would be?

Yeah Gerald was a really good fighter but his defense was always horrible because he knew he had a great chin so he took punches to land his own in there. But turned out to be a curse for him because Nigel Benn was a big puncher himself and the amount punches he took in that fight there's no wonder something tragic happened, and also if you believe that he was suffering from brain problems leading up to that fight

What a great informative article however a sad state as well. I can think of several fighters I personally know that have shown signs of CTE and as time goes by and ageing what will become of them in the later years, even myself I never was knocked out or stopped or hurt badly in a fight, but we never know what a fighter goes through in the gym leading up to fights and the different weight individuals spar with in the gym in preparation, which all plays a part. These organizations should be forced to do better and stop allowing mismatches or suspend fighters at higher risk or taking fights due to a promoter offering a few dollars to promote their fighters development, they all do it, and are all apart of this systematic corruption just like politics. We have to be better and do better!
