Comments Thread For: 'Frustrated' Galal Yafai feels overlooked in victory

Galal Yafai is "frustrated" at not receiving the credit he believes he deserves for retiring Sunny Edwards. The 31 year old won every minute of every round against his flyweight rival until the referee intervened to rescue Edwards in the sixth.

Galal needs to hunt giants for respect. Even before Bam, Sunny wasn't scaring anybody. Bam ran over Sunny like a penny on a train track and Galal wants credit for hitting the penny after it was flattened.

Yafai is just frustrated and I can understand his frustrations
It was a great win vs a good fighter
Just move on and the accolades will come in due time

          Why is this guy whining?

He got a big win and it put his name on the map. Time to build on that and do more.

I get the frustration. You stopped a good fighter, albeit a flawed and damaged one, but still a good fighter. All everyone's talking about is THAT guy.

            Just do your thing.

Didn't know Yafai was actually older than Edwards

I think Galal has a fair point and he absolutely did make it look easy and even if that was brief he deserves credit for that.

But Sunny is different. It’s like he realised very early the writing was on the wall and went in to retreat mode, fought to survive not win. But it was Galal’s total dominance from the start that did that. He got off to a much much quicker start than Bam did and didn’t let up. He’s going to be a handful for anyone including Bam. Nicely balanced and hits with power from range. I think Sunny has made the right decision though. Short time in the spotlight but on his day great to watch. Not a style that ages well.

Not sure the context of this interview, but that's not a good look crying like a baby after a victory!

I think it was a good performance, not a great one. At one point I thought "this guys looks like a world beater!" which is of course the narrative he and Eddie Hearn would like us to all buy into. Yafai's work rate was frankly, astonishing. Like, "is this guy on PED's or something?!" astonishing. Assuming he is clean, that was an incredible aspect of his performance. He wore Sunny down, with heavy looking hands, but not serious one punch power, and mostly glancing blows. His accuracy was the least impressive aspect of his performance. So we have an exciting fighter with a phenomenal work rate, who showcased this against a broken fighter who never had power to keep someone off him when at his best anyway, but Yafai lacks elite power imo, and has average/mediocre accuracy. I know he's now a division up, but people are hyped about Bam. He looks unstoppable. That's the difference and this performance was no where near the level we're seeing from a fighter who is rightly hyped. I'd like to see Yafai deal with adversity, get a better feeling for his power, and improve his accuracy before I get hyped on him.
Also, I gave Sunny round 2.
